Chain split links

I need to replace my chain and I was wondering what people think about split links. Do any of you guys use them ?

Thats a definite NO!
You'll break it!, superbikes make too much power for a split link, use one in an emergency only and then take it easy.
More appropriate for low power bikes

What you mean by split link , C type or SOFT link , most peeps use a SOFT link that needs a chain rivet tool , where are you there are plenty of tools about if you need a lend of one

I would not use a C type link only a Soft link , i have a chain tool if you are near Northern Ireland and want to borrow it :D

That's very interesting. Someone I know recommended replacing the chain and using a split link to enable it to be easily taken on / off.

Thanks for the offer of the chain tool, but I live down south so would be a bit of a treck.

I know someone who uses a split link on his 350hp drag bike without any problems.

When you think about it there is no reason why it should be weaker than a riveted link, there are no sideways loads on the chain and the pins going through the links are the same material as the rest of the chain.

I guess bikes are manufactured with endless chains becasue its one less job for them to do on the production line.

I use C type links in work all the time , but i would not use em on my 998 , maybe thats just me ;)

RH is right, there IS NO reason why these should be any weaker. That said, I'm not sure I would ever want to trust one because I have seen them fail in the past.

I use a C type split link on the Jota and for some unexplainable reason it regulaly ? looses the C clip, so I have to check the chain each time the bike has been out for a run!!!

Before any bright spark asks, I always fit the C clip in the right direction to chain travel!

I use splitlink chains on all my race bikes and never had a problem but always lock wire the link. This always made scooter916 laugh untill he went out at cadwell last season and lost the c-clip off his chain.

I use them on the DR all the time...as I'm often changing wheels/sprockets combos etc...never had a problem with them.

The Duke on the other hand, as the gearing remains the same for 99% of the time, I always rivet the link for that extra peace of mind.
