If I pull away in 1st using low revs and no clutch my 748 chatters along. If this usual ?

no clutch ??

if you mean it kind of hunts in the rev range and lurches a little thats just the engine being lumpy at low revs, might also be worth checking the state of your chain tension and sporocket condition .....

No Duke that I've ever ridden has felt happy without the engine doing at least 2.5K revs - preferably over 3K revs.

Try and chug along at lower revs than that and the engine will be very lumpy. Even in low gears you often need to feather the clutch a little in traffic and around tight roundabouts

"they all do that sir"

low revs without clutch slip = "dumdumdumdumdum"

Yes, they all do do that, to an extent, but as Dibble says, it's worth checking chgain tension (not too tight!) and chain and sprocket condition. Can you lift the chain away from the rear sprocket at 9 o'clock?

Might be worth checking the condition of your clutch basket too.

I am changing the chain and sprockets this weekend. The clutch basket does have a few notches in it. How can you tell if it needs replacing ?

Do you really mean chatter.....isnt that a technical term reserved for suspension/tyres?

Even the 748 has a pair of big pistons compared to a ujm. they need revs............

I've spotted the problem - you've got a Goldwing, not a Ducati :o

If you work hard and save your pennies you too could have one.
