View Full Version : 996 SPS Track Bike
I have found a 996SPS track bike (Year 2000, but I assume early as it has Showa forks) , 5000 miles, says well maintained, any ideas what to look for to confirm how well its been looked after if the paper history is not complete?
Also what is best to look for to confirm its a true SPS, not just sporting a swapped top yolk!?
Cheers

you can check the frame number with Ducati UK - as for the maintenance - check service history with the dealers who stamped the book.

Think the front head casting shouldnt have 4vDOHC cast into it if its a genuine SPS

I believe that rule only applies to 748SP's. 916SPS has "4VDOHC" cast on it.
Look for:
P8 computer
Dual pickups on LHS engine case
Ohlins rear
But mainly check the engine number with DUK.

If its an SPS - it'll have a large computer (P8) under the seat unit.
I don't think these were fitted to any other bikes.

Excellent, thanks for your help guys. I am going to look at the bike in the next few days so I will let you know how it goes.
If it is a good one you will see another 200 posts on the message board about setting a 996SPS up for the track!

Ooooh...I will check mine later tonight!
P8 computer also fitted to original 1994 916 Strada. Strada does not have dual injector bodies though (check by looking to see dual feed to injectors).

You are completely correct ducv2 and I was (unusually :frog: ) wrong...916SPS has no writing cast onto the cylinder heads.
Bradders: I've never worked out how to spot the "sand cast casings" either!
RX
Is it only the 'R' models that have the sand cast casings (God, I'm sad):lol:

Much though I love my 996SPS, is it posssible the 916SPS was a bit more special??, the cases on mine are smooth(ish) and do not appear to be rough sand castings, I would be happy if they were, make it even better in my eyes. No faster though. Think we have hijacked this post, sorry. :):)
