View Full Version : Hi All
Hi All
Newbie here from sunny Bolton, just saying hello and already wondering if anyone can help. I have just turned 44 and obviously decided to do my direct access, like ye do. bought myself a very nice 05 ST4S and now the beggar wont start. There is a click from the solenoid under the seat, the fuel pump makes a whirring noise, there is another click then nothing. any ideas. I was wondering if its the starter solenoid
Welcome!
Can't help you, but I'm sure someone will shortly :)

Either battery not up to it or a loose connection, check the battery terminals are tight and also check hey aren't corroded

Hi, Certainly does sound like starter solenoid...
Try sparking a screwdriver directly between the solenoid poles to eliminate the unit.
My MOT tester burned mine out cranking it over non-stop!
I went straight to these guys for a replacement:

Thanks for the welcome and advise the battery is in perfect order as are all the connections just shorted across the terminals on the starter solenoid and the engine turned over so thank you job done. new solenoid needed

Hello,
Glad the tip worked out for you.
Looks like there is a change in design on the relay from 2003 onwards, you might be best phoning Elextrex, I pretty sure they were out of stock when I needed a relay pronto, so I paid a little more and used Ducati Coventry: Massive stock, delivered next day.
Good luck.

No problem, well worth checking the fly lead to the starter motor. Older design used to hold water and rust the holding nut in place, even worse, being rough with the nut and snapping the post going into the starter.
I added a spare lead I had to help with starting, thicker/better leads are recommended but might be overkill.
Good luck.
Oh yes, use some grease (electrolytic?) on the terminals.
