You might have to go for a carbed ducati - don't think you can restrict the FI ones.

In which case go for a 900 SL :D

My vote goes to a 800 Monster Dark. Excellent riding position/visibility, not outrageously fast, good hooligan potential and a very under-stressed motor. A mint low-mileage one on autotrader should set you back no more than £5k, keep it garaged and the insurance could be manageable.

Or you could bet the £6k on the 3.30pm at Goodwood, and spend the winnings on 999R....

Good luck,

Ali

I doubt very much whether you'll get any insurance for a superbike at your age.You might want to check a few insurance companies before committing to anything. That said, theres bound to be something for you---er, monsters?,ss's?.
Depend what you want-faired or unfaired?,If your a new rider you wont want something too quirky.(monster again?)
And if your determined to get a ducati,I'd stash away some of your budget to properly service it as they're bikes you neglect at your peril.

ali
03-Jun-2004, 15:30
Completely forgot you need to have restrictions. Make that a 750 Monster.

>In which case go for a 900 SL

You don't want a Superlight. They're nonsense. Not enough of em around. They're the sort of bike that should be left in carefully humidity-controlled garages for the next 20 years, and then sold to me for peanuts when mine wears out!

The boys are right about getting your insurance quotes first.
Remember, that anything over £5k is likely going to cost you lots more, as you are under 21 (dont ask me, but thats the way they seem to go).
Over 500cc at 18 could also cost you for insurance too
Have you done your test yet?
Maybe Ronnie at insuremyducati.com could help out on this one?

Just an idea for you: my daughter at 17 & 7 months got an old NC21 (1987 model), 2 years no claims, garaged, non commute, and 1st year - from the cheapest quote cost her £1280!!! (this year at 20, came down to £385, still no claims or convictions....yet!)

Easy to restrict the carbed monsters - not too sure about the injected ones. That said, havent heard of any monster over 600 that has been restricted yet (least, not on the UKMOC site).

Happy researching - and good luck with whatever you get

:D

Don't forget that there's also a Monster 400 - it's just that we don't get it in the UK. It might be worth trying to find an imported one, but get a quote first.

Although the bike will probably be under the figures for restricted bikes, the fact it's a grey import may up the insurance too much.

Just another option to throw in!

I wouldnt go for a monster 600/620 - far too gutless and you'll get bored of it pretty quickly, go for the 900 - it wont cost too much to insure, I was paying 1200 TPFT on a fireblade at 19, and that's group 17 :o

Actually ill probably for for a 998R or a MV F4 1000 (according to MCN this is will be better than the R1 and RSV) but again MVs are uninsurable for under 28s, i tried but no success, anyway ive already got an MV to play with ;)

this your first road bike mate?

TJ
04-Jun-2004, 17:25
Hi,

If this ‘is’ your first bike I strongly wouldn’t recommend getting a 748 or 900 Monster or any bike twin!

Its best to start off with something a little smaller and a little cheaper. Remember at the end of the day no matter how good you think you are, you will drop it especially if experience is minute and you are riding a powerful twin. I must stress that power delivery on twins is totally diverse to 4s and smaller bikes i.e. small singles. Also big twins, if not used properly they can throw you off especially in the wet.

I advise getting something a little smaller as a starter/first bike... i.e. a little 400 or a SV650.

I started with a 50cc at 16, then a 125, then I got a ZXR400, which was a great little bike, then, a ZX6R, again after that I bought a new CBR600RR (after I had built up my experience on the others and crashed them) and then the 748R.

I’ve got to admit I was like you, I also wanted to go out and spend loads of money on a big bike, but that really wouldn’t have been a clever idea.

If this is your first bike, and you have had little road experience and the bike is mainly for road riding, then 6k to spend on a bike is not the way to do things! You can learn the hard or easy way. Trust me the hard way isn’t nice, I remember seeing my parents faces’ when I had my first ‘big’ crash when I was 17 (which incidentally was another road users fault), it wasn’t good, my mother was heart broken. If I had bought a brand new shiny Duke, and this happened it would have cost major $$$, luckily it was only a little 125 and was easily sorted J Had the same problem with cars, but because I remembered my past experiences I held out on a sports car till a year ago.

Riding bikes on the road is not easy (not trying to put you off), there are many dangers that can be caused both by the riders and others (i.e. car drivers, pedestrians etc). For a start, most people can’t see bikes nor do they understand that the balance is different to four wheels when you are on a bike.

You are still young and have years to come, take it step by step!

Remember it isn’t always good to have it all at once, you get bored too easily, this is the same with girls.

My 2p.

All the best and good luck with what ever you do.

TJ

well said TJ.

6k for a first bike is way OTT.

In my very honest opnion i wouldn't go for a duke as a first bike, why not a gixxer 600 or Kwak 636?more than enough power for public roads.

And you always crash your first bike,id rather crash a gixxer or kwak than a nice 748.

Im 18 as well,
I had a cagiva mito 125 first and now a 400,both awesome handling bikes and after this summer,im selling my nc30 and getting a TL1000.
and dont want a ducati yet even tho i could buy a 2nd hand one.

plus if you buy a 600,you could buy a decent one for 3300 MAX and save about a grand on insurance and buy sum decent leathers and lid.:saint:

Surely if the guys got 6 grand to spend...It's his...and he should spend it how he likes....

I bought a V twin for my FIRST big Bike...AND had my 125 for less than 6 months before thinking "what the heck" throwing caution to the wind and getting what I really wanted instead of Nancying about and "working my way up"...
Stuff it! if you can afford the insurance GO FOR IT! Yes I know I'm a woman...yes, my age is a factor, However...I'm only passed a year AND my insurance is still expensive.

Yes...I dropped it...(on numerous occasions!)
So what? It's a bike...It's a hazard of biking...:D

Yep - comes down to looks as IMO any modern sportsbike is capable enough - and if the 999 is so good why does Chili prefer the 998 ;)

At the end of the day even if the 999 would let me lap 1 second quicker round a track, I still wouldnt have one as they are so damn fugly!!!! :sing:

my bikes were, honda XL125R. honda CB125. Suzuki GSX250. then straight on to a honda CBR1000FH. got plenty of experience(usually by falling off) on smaller bikes then moved onto a better ie more expensive bike. oh hang on?? i still fall off!!.

if you buy a smaller duke (600ss/600monster)they are easy enough to handle to gain experience. cheap to buy. and when you are ready to move up you should'nt lose too much money.
low insurance group.
good looking/sounding.
and its a Ducati.

for my two pennyworth
After being off bikes for 10 or 12 years, I got a carbie 600ss
For the first 6 months it was fast enough, handled well, and let me remember or improve my skills. It was cheap enough to purchase (dont know about a youngsters insurance tho') and it was a duke. I was lucky enuff not to drop it, stationary or moving, but if I had, it wouldnt have been really a major prob, loadsa spares out there for them.
If Sgt Law wants a duke, why not start at entry level, it may not have the top end of an IL4 or even the acceleration, but a DUKE is a DUKE
:roll::roll:

ali
05-Jun-2004, 10:20
I'd agree with most of the above, but the duke 600 is pretty gutless. I know I would've been bored to tears with it at 18, and a danger to other road users as I thrashed the nappers of it everywhere.

I had an RD200 at that age and rode like a lunatic (you couldn't ride them any other way!). It was only when I got my first 900 duke and relaxed into using torque to propel me out of corners that I started to really learn about handling (for my money a more satisfying topic than outright speed). There's something very un-rushed about the 900 engine, but it's still hugely satisfying. Just need an RS250 for the track now.....

And yes, get some top-quality leathers, preferably made-to-measure, a decent lid, gloves, boots'n'all. You never know what you're going to hurt when you come off, so you may as well protect it all.

Most sound peice of advice mate, thought I'd chop me 750ss in for a nice shiney 999 until I had a test ride on one. Couldnt get on with it, most uncomfortable saddle I've ever sat on! Worse than the KH500 I had as MY first "big" bike at the age of 19. One of my mates got an xs1100 at 21, another got a Z-thou at 20. dont worry, no one does "bad" at the DSC, not for long anyhow
Just get out there , test ride some bikes, and ride, but remember the stats
Accidents/injuries/fatalities are mostly either in the under 20 age bracket, or those "born again bikers" at 50 plus years young
I guess at 55 yrs young I fall into latter category which is why I went for the gutless, underpowered 600ss before moving up to something a likkle less tame ie the 900ssie
Im sure you are very capable, but remember around every bend, theres a muppet at 20 mph or worse still, a tractor droppin loadsa diesel and hay on the road, or even worse than than that, stationary...........and you is doing 100 plus and need to stop in 50 metres.............very painful if not deadly.
OK so lets not put the mockers on this, there are a lot of powerful userfriendly bikes and some are dukes that will fit the bill
go with what you feel comfortable with, dont need to pose too much (unless its a blooo duke) and enjoy the thrills that bike riding brings with it
