I was at Coventry Ducati yesterday discussing options for using my sportclassic 1000S for Thunderbike Racing. One of the things they didn't think was possible was using slick tyres with inner tubes on the 1000S wire wheels.

Does anyone know if it's possible to fit slicks to the wire wheels using inner tubes?

Tubeless tyres are used in supermoto and aprillia 450 racing wich used spoked tyres. SO ispokes and slicks can work, but not with an innertube. The tube and tyre would overheat with catostophic consequences me thinks:(

I don't think ACU regs allow slicks for Thunderbikes. I may be wrong

With the low tyre pressures that Slicks use you would probably be in danger of ripping the valve out of the innertube as the tyre deflects as its worked to keep the heat in it.
Probably why you see a few Sports classics running 749/999 wheels which also allows the use of 4-pot and 4-pad calipers

Yes you can, nothing to do with ACU, It's the Thunderbike regs that you need to look at.

Done some research on this & it's not a good idea apparently, best to stick some ally's in, you should be able to sell your wire's ok, Rich at Louigi Moto was after some.

...nothing to do with ACU...

What Chaz meant to say is if the Supplementary regs allow it then yes however the ACU regs states "unless stated otherwise in the supplementary regulations the use of slicks are not permitted at meetings of below national standard" so it depends what the Thunbike series Sup Regs state.

Nothing to do with the ACU isn't quite correct chief.

I am new to this site but thought that I would contribute to this thread.

An italian company called Alpina developed a system of sealing spokes on wire wheels originally for supermoto use; but they also make specific wheels for the Sport Classic range so tubeless tyres (slicks or otherwise) can be used.

They quote the combined weight saving to be 1.5Kg. I have also seen people in the States using these wheels with four piston callipers. So it can be done.

I was aware of Alpina also that the system wasn't very good on most wheels that's the reason for the specific wheels they sell.

I asked about this and its a case of a bad workman always blaming his tools. There is no problem with either the old or newer Alpina systems - the latter of which is specifically designed for converting tube type spokes to tubeless with out changing hubs or rims- if the technician follows the instructions.

The essential problem was that if you airgun the nipples tight it destroys the sealing O ring. I just thought that I had better set the record straight.
