On my 2000 996 I used to run steep steering head angle and chain adjusted with the hub about 6 o'clock to raise the rear a touch. 7.0 kg/mm spring on an ohlins shock.
Front end was sorted by K-Tech and it was the dogs danglies.

You dont mention what tyres your running but as you have the wheels off the 748 I guess they are the same as what the 748 had on?

I probably weigh a lort more than a lot of riders on here which may help stabilise the bike but I never had bad headshakes, little ones yeah but nothing like the R6 used to do.
I ran a sprint adjustable steering damper on the 996.

Trying to get the 998 to handle the same but not succeeded yet.
Softened the Ohlins rear spring to a 7.0 again, same damper, standard head angle for now, forks to go to K-Tech soon.
The thing I have different is I am usiong Pirelli Diablo Corsa tyre instead of my usual BT012SS's but there on their way too.
Just need to get everything else back to the way I had the 996 set up now.

The settings I had on my 748 were done over a period of 6 years so each adjustment was done "a bit at a time". The main reason I ended up with the hub at 9o'clock was that I put a 39T sprocket on but didn't get a longer chain (DOH!!!) - however, I found that it still handled nicely and wasn't TOO frisky so so I left it like that!
The reason that I am now keen to replicate these settings is that I know that they work for me - however the problem appears to be that even though I am close to the same settings (hub is now at more normal 6o'clock poition), it is nowhere near as nice to ride. That's what is puzzling me. It's miles out and as I said, it feels downright dangerous!!

could the front tyre/profilesize be an issue?
