How are you connected to your backup device? Fibre, SCSI? If so which type? Are you running the latest drivers for your SCSI adapter/HBA and firmware? If it's SCSI are you terminated properly etc? Drivers for the device itself?(if required?)

This looks a little like a driver/firmware related issue.
