I know it's not really the dukes fault.

It's all part of the ducati ownership experiance :D ,Finding these things out.

You are right, it is a awkward job.

$35USD FROM MOTOWHEELS ---pressurise tank with airgun with cap on ,or alternatively use a maglite ( powerful torch to locate cracks in tank :--they are usually found along the top edge of tank nearest airbox
