Simon Keefers link shows the clutch needing held to loosen/tighten the alternator nut. I found the vise grip type clutch holding tool that they used in the Haynes manual is made in the states with a UK Distributor Motion Pro part number 08-0008 Heres the website http://www.motionpro.com/Docs/servicetools_3.html And this lot sell them in the UK, around £ 22.00 inc postage, it works well and the company below delivered next day Allen's Performance R&D Unit B9, Moorbridge Road Bingham, Nottingham NG13-8GG Phone: 011-44-1949-836-733 Fax: 011-44-1949-836-734 |

dude you need to hold the clutch to undo/tighten the nut |
I got it off and it look all good, I had to tap it off. I cant see no damage at the moment, so it mite just need tightening up. Back in a bit. :biaggi: |
once you have put it all back together (without cranck cover on) you can jab the starter button to see if the sprag clutch is holding. don't let in run though. remove the fuel pump loop so it wont prime. [Edited on 24-8-2005 by keefer] |
Beware the starter clutch though. When it starts to go wrong it makes a sort of screech when you are starting. This noise may be disguised by a chattering if the real problem is that your battery is too clapped to run the starter. Either way, when you start to get wear in the starter (sprag) clutch, it means taking everything apart again. Oh and if a sprag clutch jams, as they can when they wear cos theyve been used with knacked batteries, they can drop nice little bits of metal into your engine. From memory, the haynes manual doesnt say much, but the 4v service notes tell you all about it. |
ok. The gear from the flywheel goes freely one way but not the other, is that normal ?:) |
in the starter clutch ;) |
that's how the sprag clutch works. engages when trying to start then spins free when running. |
ok i get it, thank for your help, and il let you no how it goes tomorrow:bouncy: |
