Thanks for the advice guys. I'm looking to move home shortly, and have viewed one or two places without a garage. I just wondered about the economics of having something specially built vs finding something more suitable in the first place. (Maybe a place with patio doors is the answer? Then I'll just park them in the lounge..!) They're currently stored at my sister's place - in a very tight space - and it's as frustrating as hell not being able to tinker with them. Steve |
Very generally speaking you don't need planning permission for a garage up to a certain size, BUT local rules and regs can vary from street to street in some places. Check out this side of things before leaping into building. Planning permission if needed might be somethine to consider if buying a place with a view to adding something on. Ray |

Khushy you might want to change the roof!!. Having a galvanised steel roof means that anyone with the aid of a screwdriver can have one of the sheets off in minutes. You might want to consider having 9mm plywood sheeting fixed down first as a deterent. |
If its attached to the house it will have to comply with building regulations regarding fire proofing, ventilation etc which adds to the cost.If its detached, distance varies depending on local authority, then as long as it doesnt exceed a certain floor area or height, again depends on local authority its no problem. All building control offices will give free advice.Brick matching will determine the material cost, especially if its on the front elevation, face brick prices/availability vary wildly.A good job is reflected if you sell in the future. |
