10W-40 FS was what ducati specified when the 996 was new, although just about everyone uses 15W oil in their desmoquattro engine nowadays

i have used 10/40 for years no problems!

It's too thin Colin - I used to use 10W/40 in my 916 and 996 - oil was fine but the engine burnt through it at an alarming rate. I was always topping up.

I sought feedback from Snell, Baines, Moto Forza Italia and Pro-Twins, all whom recommend 15/50.

It appears to be a rule of thumb lately, ask for advice, get good advice, ignore it & USE THE S--T YOU HAVE under the bench.

What's wrong with burning a bit and topping up or put another way helping to replenish the additives?

Not sure where 10W/40 comes from, it is recommended for later Testastretta engines if you look at the later Ducati technical posters such as the one from 2006

But look at the earlier year 2000 Ducati Technical poster and they recommend 20W/50 for the earlier Desmo-quattro engines such as the 996

I'm not sure I would call Shell Advance oil s**t!
If someone had said don't use it, it will do unrecovable damaged then I wouldn't have. I have never had any evidence on my bike of oil burning using it.

Just to clarify you posted on 2nd oct that you had a quantity of 10/40 that you had had for a while, why buy more .(I rest my case)
