Is it only the 996R that had the new Testastretta?

Of the 996 models, only the 996R has the Testastretta.

What are the basic differences between the 998R and 996R if someone doesn't mind putting them up for me?

Different bore and stroke, 2 bhp more on the 998R

Also are R models as rare as I think they are?

Yes!!!

2001 996r Stretta engine, 998cc ohlins front and rear, carbon belly pan, V piece, side panels, air box, chain guard & number plate holder. 4 pads calipers Not sure if they had a carbon seat unit. All other 996 2001 models were non stretta.

2002 998r stretta engine but bigger bore, 104mm, shorter stroke, 999cc. 3 BHP more according to Ducati. Ohlins front & rear, Carbon belly pan, V piece, side panels, air box, chain guard & number plate holder and a smooth seat design in carbon.
996 discontinued now called 998 with various flavours of stretta engine for the BP, S (bip and mono)

www.ducati.com has pictures and specs of the variations.

Ray the 996R does not come with a carbon seat unit, i actually prefer the looks of the vented seat unit to the slightly more bulbous smooth unit, then again i also prefer the vented fairings on the standard 996's to the smooth ones on the 996R/998's
