I don't think its my place or right to ask for a rule change at this time of the year - the rules have been carefully constructed with lots of variables to consider. I'm just asking for advise on which forks work best.

bradders 19-Nov-2011 12:45

I have asked Kev to consider and respond. Seems madness a set of ST4 or early ST2 (which are adj) are more expensive than 9** and in some cases the same price as 848!! Madness!!

Got the Pm and here's my answer

NO nd thats without considering any offset changes.

As you can't fit them in a SS type frame without Custom yokes then it can't be applied right across Class A
Originally forks weren't adjustable so those that had the money to spend with Maxton and the likes could take advantage of the rules as they were.

I opened it up to allow adjustable showa or Marzocchi forks from OEM Ducati that fit in the standard yokes, these include the following Monsters, STs and Supersports M900, M900ie M1000ie, S4 and S4R, 1000S2R then there are the ST2, ST3, ST4 and possiblty the ST4S, along with 900SS, 900SSie, 1000SS and possibly some of the sports classics,

So not the shortest of lists and when considering changing Class A to adjustable forks these sort of things were considered

Also the 43mm later forks are the same diameter tube as the superbikes so I suspect its possible to use parts from the superbike forks in the non adjustable forks

I currently have a set of 748 forks on ebay at £120, yet I've just paid the same for a set of ST4 forks for the M620 and could do with another set for my second 620SS. So I could try swapping bits about but as I've never had a issue sourcing forks that comply with the rules I'll just sell one set and buy another

Closing date for suggested changes the rules was November 5th as per the 2011 rule book, but a week before that there were calls for the issue of the Class A rule book. Now there are calls for more changes
As usual in the off season there are a small few that want the rules changed to suit them where as the majority accept the rules as they are and get on and build their bikes accordingly.

bradders 19-Nov-2011 17:31

fair enough, but these things do come up in closed season - its only November - and if you think back the reason I asked where A rules were was because B and the new C1 were drafted but not A which seemed odd...

seems far more complicated than simply changing yokes and forks then, and well done on the ST forks - most on Ebay are £200 and north for shitty old pitted ones!!

and what use is rule books if you cant chuck em out the window occasionally ;)

There is a set of ST forks on Ebay at the moment, bidding is currently at £80
Kev P picked up a set of 900SSie or possibly 1000SS/DS ones a couple of weeks ago for £100.
The ones I bought came off Ebay, listed by Steve Klee so I met up with him last Wednesday and saved on the postage

Just a thought, but it seemed to me that while we were on the Pirellis, especially the year on the Rossos, fiddling with suspension was important to get the best out of the tyres.

Last year with the stickier Dunlops, I reckon the properly set up pair of non-adjustable forks from 2009 would have been as good as the adjustable ones I was using.

But then I'm a bit of novice when it comes to forks.......

I and dozens of others are probably watching that pair ;)

And like most things in life, its who not what you know and as much right place right time as anything... I dont even have my bike yet

I'll probably just get them resprung for me anyway, as I said before; too much to worry about with gearing never mind suspension

Hugh used the same gearing everywhere and it didn't seem to slow him down.

bradders 19-Nov-2011 20:18

but I'd expect with a super light weight bike and pilot, making decent power, the gearing is less important....who knows...I'm probably talking bollix as normal

Jolley 19-Nov-2011 20:51

His bike wasn't as light as everyone assumed. I'm pretty sure it was over 160kg (so a good 10kg more than some! ;) ), and Hugh isn't exactly a lightweight due to his height...
