Modifications

Have had feedback on covering the above.

Having spoken to underwriters, most mods can be accepted (there are some limits) and underwriters usually deal with this by applying a standard parts clause which limits the cost, where a part needs to be replaced, to the cost of the standard part.

The question is how much does a modification become worth when it has been put on a bike? Minor modifications such as carbon don't seem to make a huge amount of difference to 2nd hand values, sometimes the price is bought down on a comparable standard bike.

Another question - say a set of Marchesini or Marvic wheels were fitted, bike crashes and wheel is buckled - needs replacing - whats an acceptable settlement? Assume new Marchesini = £1600, S/hand £1000, Replacement standard Ducati Wheels = £not sure!

How much extra would you pay to cover modifications (main items, wheels, exhaust and forks) - on the above example:

Replacement as new addl £80
Indemnity (s/hand value) £50
Or contribution to value of standard parts only - no extra cost?

Look forward to hearing from you all!

Dont get done for speeding! :(

Murray Mint 21-Oct-2003 21:13

Just to say thanks for this great idea. Just saved about £200.00 using this method and will be using it for my car insureance when it's due.

faxed Insurance System Q

Sounds like a great method, Please confirm my thoughts on this method. When you receive the 50 or so faxed replies, you then re-fax the cheapest to the rest of the companies, who then reply and try and beat the quote?

PS. How do i get a hold of that ' If only all things were this good ' macromedia flash picture which murray mint has...it is superb!!or is it a pic of the missus?

What a fantastic thread.......

Its easy to see from the enthuiasm of the postings that everyone is tired of paying high premiums.

It stuns me to think that I've been riding over 20 years now (Jeez) and never, ever made a motorcycle claim - I reckon I could almost had a nice 998 in my garage by now!

It does strike me though that Ducati's (and spares) are relatively expensive and this is part of the price we sadly, have to pay.

My insurance is due in April and even though I'm very happy with Carole Nash insurance, I'm sure I'll be using some of the methods posted in here.

As a aside - before I got my Duke I insured my car with Norwich Union as they were the only insurer I could find who provided FREE motorcycle cover (third party obviously) for riding a bike not belonging to you.

Finally - I think Murrey mint did post his lovely boobs somewhere, cant imagine what u might search for though.

DJT
Tough luck mate, unless u know it was you its always worth checking - heard of a few cases of false ID recently.
IMHO - bang the insurance renewal in quick !!!

I used this method as well last year (thanks Simon). I bought a second hand fax machine from work just for this purpose - if anyone nearby wants to borrow it, just let me know.

As well as saving money it also saved the hassle of ringing loads of companies and answering the same questions each time. Will definitely do it again!

sounds like a great plan to me, i'll be filling it in and seeing if i can get my quote of £630 for a 748r down to something more reasonable

cheers

Well.. no idea if this will work, but I am right now faxing my form to those companies.. worth a try.. I'll let you know what happens...!

Dunks 01-Nov-2004 23:02

Well.. it worked for me!

I faxed every number on the list.. got about 10 quotes from it, mostly competitive but some just plain silly like £1200!! I went for Laxtons at £650 fully comp on an ST2 with no NCB. That is about £200 cheaper than my current bike insurer. Great idea.. thanks for the tip. It took me an hour and ten minutes to do the faxing and saved £200. Gotta be worth a try...!

I did it a month or so ago, and funnily enough ended up with Laxtons ..

Simon,

Fantastic tip - thanks, I sent out a fax at the end of last week, had about 15 replies and saved about £60 over my existing insurance companies best quote, and all for minimal effort.

Laxtons were the best - £380 on my 749s, fully comp, termi, gauranteed NCD, riding other bikes, full legal cover.

Sorry I couldn't add any more fax numbers to your list, but I think there's enough there already.

Cheers,
Tom

2) Fill out a word doc with all the questions that they will ask you (Again I have a template)

3) Use a PC Modem to FAX all of the brokers over night (can take a few hours as the form is 4 pages long!)

4) Wait until they Fax back their quotes

5) Re Fax the best Quote to all of them again

Repeat steps 4 & 5 until you are confident you have the lowest possible quote!

i am just about to attempt this, ill let you know how i get on.

i tried this method and sent off faxes to 20 diffrent insurers,so far i have only received replys from two companys two days later.Am i expecting things to quickly or could i have done something wrong?I really need this to work as the quotes i have had are way to high.

TP 20-Jan-2005 18:17

I got my replies back quicker than that. Maybe chase them?

Make sure you include Laxtons ...

deej 26-Jan-2005 22:33

i used insure my ducati and would recommend all to do the same

£50 cheaper for my 748 fully comp than my r6 was 3pft

great policy, legal fees, european cover all for under £450

and a top bloke to deal with as well

rockhopper 07-Jun-2005 23:08

I emailed my quotation request to insuremyducati.co.uk last year and didnt get a reply so i went with Carole Nash. Renewal time this year, i emailed my request last night and guess what, no reply again. Looks like Carole Nash will be getting my business again this year.

ducatisps 18-Jun-2005 12:10

Paul

Quote went on our system on 7/6/05 - have you not had a call back from the brokers?

rockhopper 18-Jun-2005 18:55

No phone call. I think i requested a faxed quote to be honest.

m1keyp 03-Aug-2005 11:53

m1keyp 19-Aug-2005 16:44

The results were interesting,10 replies.

Nobody beat my Benetts renewal at £ 157.00

However to protect my no claims benetts wanted £ 325.00:puzzled::puzzled:

Managed to get protected no claims as a result of the faxes for £ 225.00

Saving £ 100.00 on Benetts:P
