Surely if the guys got 6 grand to spend...It's his...and he should spend it how he likes.... I bought a V twin for my FIRST big Bike...AND had my 125 for less than 6 months before thinking "what the heck" throwing caution to the wind and getting what I really wanted instead of Nancying about and "working my way up"... Stuff it! if you can afford the insurance GO FOR IT! Yes I know I'm a woman...yes, my age is a factor, However...I'm only passed a year AND my insurance is still expensive. Yes...I dropped it...(on numerous occasions!) So what? It's a bike...It's a hazard of biking...:D |

...............and what do you base that statement on young man :P:P What didn't you like about it presuming you have ridden one. You can't go on looks alone you know or I certainly wouldn't be married to a supermodel today :smug::smug::smug: The 999R will blow any 748/916/996/998 into the weeds don'tchaknow :smug::smug: |
yep very true but hes asking for advice. |
Fairey nuff!!!! |
My 996 is so much more capable than I am, let alone any R. I wouldn't be able to explore the advantages that a 999R has over a 998R to be honest - I just like the look of the 998R better is all. I speak for me only but maybe it's a similar reason for the others? |

yep. |

Yep - comes down to looks as IMO any modern sportsbike is capable enough - and if the 999 is so good why does Chili prefer the 998 ;) At the end of the day even if the 999 would let me lap 1 second quicker round a track, I still wouldnt have one as they are so damn fugly!!!! :sing: If anyone comes across any aftermarket bodykits then I might change my mind ;) [Edited on 4-6-2004 by DJ Tera] |
Yep looks mainly, i wont be able to ride a 998R or a 999R to its full on the road. Also there is a company that have developed some improved fairings for the 999R which improves looks even more ;) only thing is... store begins with C..... ccccasoli :( TJ. BTW.. Kwikbitch he came on here for advice, we are only giving our 2p if he doesnt like it he doesnt have to listen! |
my bikes were, honda XL125R. honda CB125. Suzuki GSX250. then straight on to a honda CBR1000FH. got plenty of experience(usually by falling off) on smaller bikes then moved onto a better ie more expensive bike. oh hang on?? i still fall off!!. if you buy a smaller duke (600ss/600monster)they are easy enough to handle to gain experience. cheap to buy. and when you are ready to move up you should'nt lose too much money. low insurance group. good looking/sounding. and its a Ducati. Best of luck. Gordy. |
for my two pennyworth After being off bikes for 10 or 12 years, I got a carbie 600ss For the first 6 months it was fast enough, handled well, and let me remember or improve my skills. It was cheap enough to purchase (dont know about a youngsters insurance tho') and it was a duke. I was lucky enuff not to drop it, stationary or moving, but if I had, it wouldnt have been really a major prob, loadsa spares out there for them. If Sgt Law wants a duke, why not start at entry level, it may not have the top end of an IL4 or even the acceleration, but a DUKE is a DUKE :roll: rgds mort |
I'd agree with most of the above, but the duke 600 is pretty gutless. I know I would've been bored to tears with it at 18, and a danger to other road users as I thrashed the nappers of it everywhere. I had an RD200 at that age and rode like a lunatic (you couldn't ride them any other way!). It was only when I got my first 900 duke and relaxed into using torque to propel me out of corners that I started to really learn about handling (for my money a more satisfying topic than outright speed). There's something very un-rushed about the 900 engine, but it's still hugely satisfying. Just need an RS250 for the track now..... And yes, get some top-quality leathers, preferably made-to-measure, a decent lid, gloves, boots'n'all. You never know what you're going to hurt when you come off, so you may as well protect it all. |
Mate best thing to do is save some money aside and buy a house or something ;) Dont spend all your hardearned at once... and why give insurance companies so much of your money :puzzled: TJ |
heres my bit of advice mate....try and get a test ride on some of them,if you're serious about buying a good dealer should help you out,you never know, you may hate the way some bikes ride/feel!!! |

Most sound peice of advice mate, thought I'd chop me 750ss in for a nice shiney 999 until I had a test ride on one. Couldnt get on with it, most uncomfortable saddle I've ever sat on! Worse than the KH500 I had as MY first "big" bike at the age of 19. One of my mates got an xs1100 at 21, another got a Z-thou at 20. None of us came off after learning the ropes on our 125's/250's of the time, well not until last year anyhow! Think my insurance is gonna be going up a bit this year too :( |
touch wood ive not had a prang since i was 17,.....33 now, phew, hope ive not given it the kiss of death!lol....i had an rg 125,cbr 600,fireblade and now i ride a 996,(did drop the blade tho,twice!doh!!!)...as long as you've got the confidence dont think it matters what bike you buy,if you dont twist the throttle you dont go anywhere!! |
well i got a lot of money just sitting there it's either a bike or a car. So bike naturally and i have been riding since 16. and hate my 125 its so boring but it rev's like hell 9.000rpm and still wants to go :D but i dont want to blow her up :D so what was every ones first bike ?? |
My first bike First bike I ever rode was a CZ 175. My mate passed his test on it (no one knew it was not a 125, except my mate!) My first bike was an MZ TS125 Lux. Heh, ugly or what?:barfy: |
My first was a Suzuki Across - not sure if they came to England or not. Basically it was a GSX 250 that had a helmet stow where the tank would normally be and the tank was under the seat (filled it up above the tail light). It was great, you could fit half a carton of beer, two bags of ice and a bottle of port in that compartment!! |
Brilliant sounding bike Tp lol :D |

I have a feeling of deja vu, but surely our most (un) beloved has not visited in another disguise??? sgt.law, will treat you as honest as you seem my first was an AJS350 longstroke, one suck, squeeze, bang, blow per lamppost. Did 75 (indicated) lets call it 70mph at max revs, somewhere around 4-4 1/2 thousand then came the jap screamer honda 305 supersports, alledgedly 100 mph at 10,000 in top rgds, a somewhat suspicious mort :bouncy::bouncy: |
C90, A100 then an XL125 in a XL100 chassis (back then you could have up to 100cc at 14 in Guernsey). The silencer kept falling off but I never really got round to fixing it. I'm sure there's some link to my love of loud dukes in there somewhere.... RD200 at 16 & 1 day, swarbrick pipes, trimmed reeds, straw boater, pipe and slippers, jumpers for goalposts, back in the day, house for a pound.... (gets coat, leaves) |
RED 1999 Cagiva mito Evo, king 125. |
FS1E-DX - the 50cc moped with a disk brake at the front and a yellow tank with Yamaha Racing Stripes on it! Pure class. |

.............and pedals as I recall. Every schoolboy's dream |
Mine didn't have pedals as it was the later restricted version - an R-reg bike (RVV 421R - why is it you always remember your first bike's reg plate?) These were only restricted with an exhaust washer anyway. Mine had a full Micron pipe on it and a "tuned" rotary disk valve too! We clocked it in the car at 48mph :D |

paulmort, please explain what ya mean deja vu ? I a have never been here before i swear to god! |
Come on Mort, you've gone and made him all paranoid now! |
Paranoid lol yes very has some one done summit bad ?? [Edited on 8-6-2004 by Sgt.Law] |
First bike? Mine was a new Gixer600. Bloomin cool that was and I still have a soft spot for Gixers. |
Also had a Fizzy DX in the Yellow & Black Pea Shooter Micron 60cc ported Big Bore Skimmed head Advanced disc valve Ace Bars Race seat no electrics except for coil wires 15 tooth front sprocket 70mph indicated downhill lying on the tank, A130 rettendon bypass. And yes 22 years on I can remember the plate OGF 896 P Martin. |
Sgt.Law dont worry, no one does "bad" at the DSC, not for long anyhow Just get out there , test ride some bikes, and ride, but remember the stats Accidents/injuries/fatalities are mostly either in the under 20 age bracket, or those "born again bikers" at 50 plus years young I guess at 55 yrs young I fall into latter category which is why I went for the gutless, underpowered 600ss before moving up to something a likkle less tame ie the 900ssie Im sure you are very capable, but remember around every bend, theres a muppet at 20 mph or worse still, a tractor droppin loadsa diesel and hay on the road, or even worse than than that, stationary...........and you is doing 100 plus and need to stop in 50 metres.............very painful if not deadly. OK so lets not put the mockers on this, there are a lot of powerful userfriendly bikes and some are dukes that will fit the bill go with what you feel comfortable with, dont need to pose too much (unless its a blooo duke) and enjoy the thrills that bike riding brings with it an old, but fairly safe mort:bouncy::bouncy: |
Sgt Law...check your U2U messages.. Nat |
Sorry nat. :( |
