Good update on the gearing chart Kev,but how come the speeds at 8000 rpm have gone up from your original chart! The thought of 4mph extra maybe more than i can handle. To kind to the bike to rev it over 9000rpm and on mine the power plummets anyway.I beleive altering the cam timing will let them rev more or for longer but not sure if its worth it.8500 in 4th and into 5th seems to work for me. I,ve tried Skids gearing so far to be spot on for me[Later 600ss]. Thanks Kev |
On later models (post 1995) 15/41 is the standard 600SS gearing and 15/43 is standard for a Monster. I usually go for 15/42 with the ability to go one tooth either way on the back sprocket, depending on what conditions are like and how long the straights are on the track. Through the box I shift just after the needle has passed 8k and in top it gets reved as far as I can get it to go. As for Andys PM asking about sump plugs On the DD bike I have a standard one that I drilled for the lockwire and on the Minitwin I have a Tecmoto one Other than Moto2 I don't know who else does sump plugs suitable for lock wiring |
Could be even kinder and change at 7500, but thats not me, if they rev to 15k, then I'll have some of that!!!! Andy |

Andrew the original speeds were based on Phil_h's Calculations, I just tweeked it so that at max power (8000rpm) my bike on standard road gearing (15/41) would be doing 120mph as it makes things easier for me to work out. This way every 1000rpm = 15mph which seems about right according to the speedo |

They do Andy but only once |
The 583ss of mine is currently on 15/40 and I have a 41. Should I be running the 14t front as its the later model? My first outing will be Oulton which lower gearing suited my R1. Andy |

Andy To back what chris woods said..you just got to get on them and ride them!...none of us have ridden the 583's at oulton yet and the track day we have there will be a good time to try out the gearing...although i ran the same gearing at Assen and BH..which suprised me......so at oulton im not changing it..the 583 deffo struggle to pull the tall gearing ..well mine does.... start it....thrash it..ride it..and get over the line...... Phil |
I change at up at 8k through the gears then hold top...so if I get 9500 it means it's along straight....Assenesque.... Try to think 250 2stroke, you'll be fine. Oulton is meant to be fast...so I'm leaving it. |
