Knox seem to be the top ones, I've just got myself a Alpinestars one for the racing.

I heard the ones which use a solid back, or vertebrae type system can actually injure you more than not having one, as when you crash these can move and ride up into your neck, so hard plastic impacts directly into the base of your skull/spinal column.

Thus the knox ones are the preferred choice now.

I have the Dianese 'waistcoat' style. I wanted it snug so deliberately bought a small one. When you pull your one-piece up over it, it does have a tendancy to ride up your back, but soon pulls back down. Apart from that I hardly notice it (altho having said that, I could have a swarm of hornets in my undies and that wouldn't sway my attention when an apex is approaching damn fast with an armco behind it).

I've got both a Dainese and a Knox. The Dainese is hard plastic backed, comfortable and I know does a decent job as it's been tested more than once by me. However, I bought the Knox on impulse one day when I was buying my MJK No Limits leathers. The soft structure seems to be better and the fit and comfort are better for me. This applies to the armour in leathers as well where current thinking tends to suggest that soft armour is better than hard as it disperse the impact. It's also a lot more comfortable to wear. I feel more secure in it as well. There are lots of manufacturers and styles/shapes, but similar rule to helmets, buy one that fits. I'm sure Dainese will be absolutely fine, but personally I prefer the Knox.
