Removing the rear shocker Any tips on removing the rear shocker on a 998 please. It looks to me as if the exhaust has to come off? How do you support the rear of the bike, hang it from the garage roof supports???? It's gonna be off the bike for a while to get a leaky seal fixed so hanging it off the gargae support will be a nuisance. Any sensible ideas and tips gratefully received. Ray |
if you have non folding rear sets then axle stands under them will do the job. other wise under the engine but keeping it upright will become a issue. and I don't remember having to remove the exhaust, but do what ever makes it easy for you |
Changed my rear shock for an ohlins on my 748. I used a centre stand put some blocks of wood under the rear wheel, loosen off the chain, remove the chain guard. Then undo the two bolts top and bottom of the shock, then let the back wheel down by removing the blocks of wood, then remove the shock. I didn't take my exhausts off to remove the shock. |
Basically need to support the bike in such a way as to allow the swinger to move up and down freely. After that, undo the top and bottom mounting bolts and getting a mate to take the weight of the swinger (pref without the rear wheel), slip the bolts out and the shock will come free. You don't need to remove the exhaust, the top bolt will slip through the gap in the frame, just need to have the bottom bolt out first to see how this works. If you still struggling, drop me a U2U and I can help. :sing: |
Used axle stands/bolts in footrest hangers on mine.Put bike on paddock stand, slide in stands, remove paddock stand.Worked a treat. |
Or a long bar through the frame |
Thanks for the tips. Time to fix the thing before it becomes a pogo stick, Ray. |
Let me know if you need a hand, Ray. I still got lots of tools...but no bike. |
Its a simple job, no need for exhaust removal, as mentioned axle stands under fixed footrests or better still a ABBA stand. then its just a matter of undoing the two bolts with a 8mm allen key. |
cheerrrriist..cant move my shock !! Just tried to get my old showa unit out and those allen bolts arent shifting..soaked them in WD40 but there not budging (the units probably never been out since it was built in '97 !! Any ideas folks ?? Nat |
