wheelie or not to wheelie ive just sold my gsxr1000 and got a 996 bip my brothers given me loads of stick about it saying it will blow up etc, did loads of track days this year and spent loads of time on one wheel he says if i try that with the duke it will blow, down to the oil pick-up or some thing ??? any ideas |
I don't think any4-stroke engine is designed to be run at extreme angles. I pity the new owners of bikes that have been vertical too long. It really screws up the engine. |
I belive the 996 has a different sump/oil pick up from the 916 because of this problem. I am sure Nelly will be along shortly to correct me. |
My 916 spent a good portion of its life on the back wheel with no ill effects. I'm sure wheelies of less than 10 secs should be pretty trauma free. As AGE said, Nely will be along in a bit with the serious tech info. :D |
I think it's prolonged wheelies that end up forcing the oil out the breather or something like that - over to someone who knows what they're talking about............ |
i have a awesome fast bikes video at home where they ride form calais to cannes and the 916 does suffer from a big oil leak but it was in the middle of a 1 mile long wheelie when it happened, short wheelies should be fine. do the wsb boys ever suffer from whilst doing celebratery wheelies at tracks ?? only my opinion but i wouldnt worry about p.s. big kev where you at a donington trackday on the 26th sept in the fast group, there was a guy on a gsxr1000 who spent a lot of time on the back wheel there |
I'm of the same, short wheelies are normally fine, it's the big long one's that you need to be carefull of.. |
celebratory wheelies are a different kettle of fish .... the motor has done it's work by then, whereas we want out engines to go on .. and on ... and on ... (I'm sure you get my drift!) I find the handle a lot better on 2 wheels too - designed to run that way I beleive ;) |
I generally put the front wheel down when the oil light comes on, I have had oil out of the breather though, (916) its not blown up yet ! Geoff M |
Wish I had the choice .... mine is on 2 wheels all the time , not through choice though :( |
