How do you stop nuisance calls???

I'm ex-directory if that means sweet FA, I'm careful about who I provide my number to and always tick the 'don't fecking pester me with junk mail or nuisance phone call' boxes when signing up for anything (or don't tick them if they are a negative tick box).

I've been getting a growing number of calls with a slight pause as you speak, which obviously trips a sound operated pre-recorded message.

Today, I've had 10 of the bastid things and I'm sick of 'em.

I read somewhere that you can get yourself off the usual junk mail lists by contacting a single organisation, but a quick Google search to see how to block these calls results in yet another bunch of companies that want to sell you the blocking service for a yearly subscription

Am I just too cynical to register and pay for this when all I'm doing is giving my details to yet another anonymous web based company? Am I the only one to suspect that the people selling the subscriptions to block calls are also the same ones that generate them?

Doesn't seem much can be done about it, BT seem to be able to do feck all about it, even though it's illegal to pester you once you've said you don't want these calls

If it is an actual person on the other end I find a nice loud whistle (police type is favourite) to be very effective. On the other hand you could always just ask them to hold on a minute and then leave the phone off the hook.....................they are paying for the call not you.

If it's a private no you can get onto BT & get it stopped (think there's a special no) I did it a couple of years ago & much to my surprise the calls stopped, for some reason you can't do the same on a business line.

Register your phone number here at the Telephone Preference Service.
http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/
All companies selling via the phone are supposed to regularly vet their database against this list and breach of those rules can lead to them being fined by Oftel. You can use this service for domestic and business numbers. I've used it for years and get no calls at home a probably 2 or 3 per week at work.
There's also a Fax Preference Service which works weel too.
