Daylight MOT What's the law with regard to a daylight only MOT? Will a "normal" MOT cover you for this? Reason for asking is that I might want to ride the beast with the track bodywork on rather than swapping it all back to road trim, but of course this wouldn't have headlights, although it would have taillights. My understanding is that to ride without lights, you have to re-MOT the thing as daylight only. Seems daft to me though. |
Nooooo! Not again! In short - you can't. The only thing you can LEGALLY ride without lights is a trials bike capable of less than 25mph. There are plenty of MOT stations who will take your money & give you a daylight only MOT but that won't make it legal though if you are on a road bike. Andy  [Edited on 2-9-2004 by Rushjob] |
So to finally put this subject to bed so to speak, where can you go to read all the relevant literature for the definitive answer. Any web links? |
not so rushjob, day time use only is available and as long as you are out during the hours of day time you cant be done |
Yes you can be done because your bike doesnt comply with the construction and use regulations. MOT doesnt mean a thing. |
I thought i'd cleared this little matter up last time ;) |
Johns questions was a bit different though. I think that unless the Police person who stops you knows the law then you'd probably be okay with a daylight MOT. Might get a bit tricky if you had an accident and a clever solicitor got on the case... |
so if you are out in daylight with a daylight MOT and a race fairing with no light what can you be done for ? and i thought MOT ment. Means OF Transport [Edited on 2-9-2004 by keefer] |

1. Faiure to maintain obligatory lamps, namely front dip beam, front main beam, front indicators. 2. It used to stand for Ministry of Transport, now susperseded by VOSA ( Vehicle & Operator Services Agency ) Cheers Andy |
ok sherlock. I can see where you are coming from it would not be a good idea to give somone incorrect advice. but this is as in the last post very shady ground. It would not be in the interests of anyone for somone to be prosecuted for having no front light during daytime hours. as you dont have to have them switched on in the first place. you cant maintain what is not there, and as for the book of law isnt that the same book that said we are not allowed to use snoopers and road angels. go on live a little rush. So you want me to say it's ok, fine, it's ok, do what you want. Next time someone asks a question, I'll just agree with them in case I upset someone's apple cart. Don't worry that they are putting themselves in jeopardy of fines or points or worse, just as long as you're happy. How is it shady? It's in black & white if you know where to look! If you are involved in a crash and don't have lights fitted, you run the risk of getting done. If you have a crash with no lights fitted, expect your compensation to plummet by approx 50%. Think out of the box a little and you'll realise that if it should be there and isn't, you fail to maintain. How about riding with no silencer fitted - it isn't there but you haven't maintained it have you? It's great to know there are folks like you out on the roads... it makes my job sooooooo easy! |
Keefer listen to a guy that knows Why ask advice then trash it accept or ignore it at your own peril Srri to be rather bullish about this, but Ive seen common sense or good advice ignored, then got moans as to why didnt I listen, type of thing Rushjob and others spent time digging this material out rgds mort |
i didnt ask for the advice but i enjoy reading it, its all well and good. but if im considerd to be a menice to society for not running a front light then ill just go hang myself now and save the cops the hard job of hunting me down. and as for the silencer that would be offensive to others and therfore i and others can understand that. and its shady because peopole are being allowd to do it and ok it may be the rumourmill but if MOT stations, bike magazines and other policemen say its ok then that is conterdictory, Dont be offended it just another point of view. Mate of mine did exactly that: rode with trackday bodywork, no lights; had an accident; not his fault (lady pulled on him); he got done for illegal vehicle even though he had a daylight MOT; no insurance payout; big solicitors fees. So, proceed at your own risk. |
QED ! |
I thought it was now mandatory to have headlights on when it's raining ?.(although you'd never believe it seeing the number of total ****s that drive down the motorway with no lights during torrential downpours) Would mean the bike with no lights would spend more time stopped at the roadside than travelling in this wonderful summer. |
Thanx Rushjob. I know you explained all this to me once in the pub, but I was plastered and wanted to try to get home before it got full dark as I've no lights. Also I wanted to see if I could hit 150 down the Oxton by-pass with my new 150Db cans. So ask me if I give a toss!!!!!!!!! I suppose the point is that although during the hours of daylight (and when not raining), we don't actually need headlights, however our ever benevolent nanny state says that we do, so there! Seriosly guys, for me this puts the matter to bed for once and for all. :pig: |
