Spluttering 996

Hi all, Some advise on my spluttering 996. I am finding if I don't use the bike for a couple of days, 2-3 mins into my ride the bike starts to splutter, so I pull over and it tick over for a few mins, all is well after that.

Have rinsed out fuel tank, new filter and fresh fuel.

Can a spark plug cause this effect.
Last week had a good run upto West Yorkshire all was well apart from the start.

Any suggestions.

antonye 06-Sep-2004 23:19

It *might* be the HT leads have perished and are getting moisture in them when sitting for a couple of days - the heat build up then evaporates the moisture and they then start working fine.

Always worth a try as there are only two of them and should be quite cheap to replace!

cmoss 19-Sep-2004 18:41

Checked all the usual, no luck. Booked in for an early 12K service Ducati Manchester. Hopefully the Mathesis Diagnostics computer will pick up the fault.
Will post there finding in two weeks.

pj748r 20-Sep-2004 13:04

Wouldn't rely on them picking up too much, they failed to find the original spark plug in one cylinder and the monster spark plug fitted in the other cylinder on my 'R'(wonder what they actually did for their £600+cost service?),wasn't impressed when i found this out, needless to say they won't be getting any buisness of me ever again.Hopefully you might have better luck:flame:

Drive another 40 miles or so and take it to Nelly at Cornerspeed.

cmoss 20-Sep-2004 14:52

Wouldn't like to risk the extra 40 miles the way it's running. Getting down the B roads just incase will be bad enough. Put old plugs back in as new didn't make any difference, so will check after to see if they have replaced them. Just hope it's not the ECU, can stomach the TPS. Wondered about buying a new eprom just to check (taken power commander off)if it's this and for about £25 good money spent I think ?

rockhopper 20-Sep-2004 15:06

If you ask him nicely he'll pick it up for you in his van.

pj748r 20-Sep-2004 15:35

Cmoss

Take it to Nelly, top class service, picked mine up after he serviced it just over 2 weeks ago, running like a dream:D.
Would be worth the hassle!!and cheaper!

cmoss 20-Sep-2004 19:00

Now that I've pre booked it in, wouldn't like to go back on my word( I know it's my money). Will see how this service goes, in future will try other service people. Will let you all know.

cmoss 28-Sep-2004 12:39

Well, finally got it in for it's 12k service. What a pig of a ride, good job I took back roads any way threw the keys into service and told them to ring when they have fixed it. We will see what happens and how long before they give up! and what the expense is :( will post results once returned :sing:

Got a call from Ducati Manchester :( 4 rockers and a cam shaft. That's only the engine inspection, will wait to see what else needs replacing. There trying to make, an out of warranty claim !!!! best sign up for another credit card!!!:D

JPM 04-Oct-2004 17:52

I am guessing it's out of warranty then? How old is your bike?

cmoss 04-Oct-2004 17:56

Ducati 996 BP registered 2002, Not really hammered it that much, no track days yet, just getting the bike ready for them next year.

JPM 04-Oct-2004 18:19

Hmmmm....

Does it feel like it's firing on one cylinder every now and again?

cmoss 04-Oct-2004 20:40

Hard to say, I've run the bike with only one cyclinder firing, forgot to connect the plug to HT coil after fitting crash bungs and it dosn't feel like that. Hopefully once they have completed the service they can then start to find out about the spluttering, may be TPS or possibly ECU fault. Should find out later on this week how things are going

JPM 04-Oct-2004 21:05

Be interesting to see what they find, and if Ducati honour the warranty etc

Rob B 04-Oct-2004 21:08

Is it on 2 or 4 injectors. The 4 injector setup is known to be a bit spluttery. FIM chip and tie off two injector feeds, different bike.

Rgds, Rob

cmoss 04-Oct-2004 21:39

It is a 4 injector model, but this has only just started to happen, have never noticed any problems upto now. Had bike one year. Will see how things go.

ziggi 05-Oct-2004 15:37

cmoss - this sounds like exactly the same problems I had after my first 6000 mile service. When I got it back is was crap, wouldn't run at low revs, popped and crackled on overrun and basically was only good flat out. The bike was re-shimmed and basic other stuff.

I took it to Sigma Performance and had FIM Ultimap chip and some fettling. Bike was transformed.

As far as I remember, there's only 2 injectors - you can get FIM chips to run with 1 or 2 injectors. I could be wrong though. Mines still running on the 2 injector setup with FIM ultimap UM239 chip (but this is for the 996S so don't get that one).

Cheers, zig

yorkshire pud 14-Oct-2004 11:41

i would check, your relays. had water in mine once farting. everyware. wd40, godd as gold.:eureka:

cmoss 19-Oct-2004 17:20

Still not got the Duke back with me ! Service completed Don't know cost yet or if Ducati are footing the bill. Struggling with spluttering fault, they have tried new TPS, new injectors on rear as Fault code showed up, no different, new pressure sensor on exp bottle no different. Now trying small wiring harness to injectors. If not new eprom, then ECU.
Boody Hell, I'll have to put the old girl out on the corner again!!!
Probably another week:mad:

m1keyp 19-Oct-2004 17:41

cmoss

totally different and unfortunately I can't help but which crash bungs did you fit ?

Cheers

cmoss 19-Oct-2004 18:37

m1keyp,

They were MOKO, aluminium brackets with 8mm threaded rod through frame, cut out pannels all ok.

m1keyp 19-Oct-2004 23:36

Thanks for that I have just bought the cyclecat product.

cmoss 04-Nov-2004 13:15

Update as to what's happening. So far they have changed over pretty much everything. ECU, Chip, Injectors and Relays. They seam to think it's a wiring loom fault causing rear injector not to fire every now and again. So a new loom is on its way. They have informed me that Ducati is picking up the bill for the rockers and cam and Manchester branch, isn't going to charge for finding the fault.
So all being well should be back with me just ready for the snow:D
But can't complain if they are picking up most of the tab especially whilst it's out of warranty.:D

cmoss 13-Nov-2004 17:13

996 arrived back this weekend :sing: The fault wasn't the wiring loom, they found it to be the Regulator/Recitifier, but only when the bike was cold and they put a load test on it and found the fault.
Really happy with the service as the final bill came to £506. Not bad considering they have had the bike for 7 weeks or so. Will be out running the parts in tomorrow. While out at the NEC I put an order in for the Techtronics Digital dash should be here in December, so will have fun fitting this. Anyway all is now well and can't wait for next year and get on the track days.
