dodgy front end Recently the bike has been handling very odd, when turning in and I hit a bump, the bike stands up, could it be too much rebound? BTW a DSC member recommended a suspension guy based in leicestershire a few months back - my advice, don't touch him with an effin bargepole :flame: |
More likely to be too much compression, not letting the spring take the jolt out of the bump. John |
don't remember any yoke probs weeksy, mind you my memory is shite! I'm gonna try backing off the compression a bit, hopefully that will sort things :) |
Why would it suddenly go like this though? |
If I were you I'd put all your settings back to standard and start again from there! |
I also remember you pushing the forks through the yokes and having it set on the steeper angle:puzzled: |
Have you replaced a front tire recently? Forgive me if you've heard this before ... If you don’t follow the proper installation sequence for the front wheel, you can incorrectly align the front axle in the forks which will cause handling oddities. The common mistake is to just tighten everything up after inserting the axle. Instead, you need to first hold the axle by torquing (19Nm) the two axle clamp bolts on the RIGHT fork to hold the axle so that you can then torque (63Nm) the 28mm axle nut. Then, you should torque the two axle clamp bolts on the LEFT fork. The axle is now securely fastened to the left fork Now, you need to loosen the two RIGHT side clamp bolts. Take the bike off the paddock stand, and bounce the suspension up and down till you are sure that the right side fork has moved to the proper (neutral) position along the axle. (It makes it easier to compress the suspension if you hold the front brake on when rocking the bike forward.) Once this is done, re-torque the two RIGHT fork clamp bolts and you’re done. |
That's handy to know, since I'm swapping the forks over this week. Amazing what you find in this place. |
Jon they ARE pushed thru the yokes (just ask skidlids how much :o) but I am running the standard angle. After sending them to shockwave suspension the right hand fork came back ****ing out oil, and the preload is almost at max just to get the right amount of suspension travel (coupled with pushing them thru the yokes) I dunno WHAT the f*** he's managed to do to my ohlins! :( The leak on the rear shock is still there despite him supposedly servicing it :rolleye: If the right hand fork has lost too much oil would this cause the problem? And Shazzam, I always check your posts before working on the bike, so the axle is definitely aligned ;) [Edited on 13-9-2004 by DJ Tera] |
Bloody hell DJ, you sure there is any oil left in it at all. I don't know what it would be, but I'm certain it wouldn't be that good. Sounds to me that the old seals had been re-fitted. Ohlins fork seals are only good for a couple of thousand miles and should be changed whenever the forks are stripped even if new. |

<Makes note to forget about ever fitting Ohlins front end...> |
Thats a myth about them needing replacing after 2000miles, mine lasted well over 9000 including 15 trackdays and loadsa hamfisted wheelies before beginning to leak! I'm tempted to send my suspension to someone who knows what they are actually doing and send shockwave suspension the bill :flame: [Edited on 14-9-2004 by DJ Tera] |
Well according to Ktec, they don't last that long on average. I can see how yours lasted 9000 miles though DJ. All that commuting through London at 20-30mph, while the rest of us are doing real speeds on real roads.:P;) |
Commuting at 30mph? LMAO :lol::lol::lol::lol::devil: |
Roy, who the blazes are shockwave suspension, I have been around race bikes and specials for years and never heard of them. I did the Ohlins forks on my mate Dallas's R1 a few weeks back without any problems, we used the seals as Dallas was told by who ever he talked to at Harris that they wouldn't sell him the seals as he wasn't quallified to do them. Next time I see Steve or Lester I will mention this to them especially as I now have Ohlins forks myself and intend to do my own servicing. As for your bikes behaviour it sounds as if the forks aren't set up equally, could be oil level/air gap, could be the adjusters bolted onto the damping rod at different heights. Kev |
Shockwave was recommended by a DSC member, can't remember who, guess I should have stuck with what I know and gone to K-tech but you live n learn! All I can say is avoid like the plague :flame: Thing is Kev, it wasn't too bad at Brands so I'm thinking it could be that oil leak has dropped the level in that fork :( Worst thing is I can barely afford to get the bike serviced at the moment (the half system is going on ebay to pay for it) let alone have the forks taken apart again :barfy: |
Why can't you just take it back and explain what has happened? I'm sure they would at least have a look if it's as bad as you say, and may even rectify any problems FOC. |
The 'work' was done back in july, haven't really got much comeback now :( |
Always worth a try.... |
DJ I've just had my forks rebuilt by Alan Hesselden (TT racer et al). He's about 5 mins from my house and resprung, revalved, and fully serviced a second set of Showa's for me. (Which I fitted during lunch...) Total cost Parts + £30. May be worth giving him a call, and getting an idea of if he can help. Although will be tricky getting hold of over the weekend as they're testing at Pembrey from tonight. U2U me if you want his number. |
Can you u2u it to me mate? Popping down the post office now to send off that seat for ya :) |
DJ - another option is HM Racing. I'm not sure where you are in London but they are in Orpington, Kent. I had my suspension setup last week and my rear shock rebuilt and they did a quality job. A few others on the board have used them as well. |
I see HM Racing do STM slippers .... ;) |
:P See my new thread .... |
:frog: |
I plenty of places to take the suspension to lads, its a question of money, its a right ****er having to shell out another couple of hundred quid on something that should have been done already :( |

Absolutely mate, that sucks. I hope it gets sorted for you soon. :( Got an STM slipper you want to sell me? :frog: [Edited on 15-9-2004 by tp-996] |

U2U on it's way. Black alcantara waiting for the seat to arrive too... I've got a pair of fully serviced, but cosmetically imperfect (one grazed red cap) Showa's you can have cheap(ish) [Edited on 15-9-2004 by Mr_S] |
Tempting, but I'm kind of attached to the bling of the ohlins  |
Weeksy - it was me who had all the yoke probs which were all sorted out. But it did manifest itself in similar ways to what DJ mentions - just much much worse. |
