Wot no \'SS\' posts No posts for TWO days !!! It aint right....ahh or maybe everyone is out riding :D Anyone care to tell me the easiest way to change a sprag clutch - AND DONT SAY "CHANGE THE ENGINE / BIKE" !!! Frank |
Er, pay someone else to do it...? :eureka: |
have you thought about changing the engine/bike sorry but you asked for that by the way i don't even know what a sprag clutch is?? any clues  |
Ok Glyn, yep I did ask for it didnt I  From my feeble understanding the sprag clutch is on the other end of the starter motor and is the the link to the engine - problems with the clutch can appear to be battery / starter motor faults but are actually down to the 'mini' clutch. Cheers - Frazzled Frank |
I thought that the spragg clutch was different to the "norm" in that it made the gear change smoother due to the instant pick up of the fly wheel...it is actually used on Gym equipment at our school and Nelly showed me a new one ages ago...(could be wrong though and the terminology is probably completely incorrect AND I'm sure someone will be along to put me straight ...After all I have a head like a sieve and I am a woman!);) |
To change the sprag clutch you need to pull the lhs engine casing and remove the generator/flywheel assembly. It's not that difficult, but you will need a puller of sorts to remove the cover and a tool to hold the alternator rotor. Also, check the driven gear where the sprag bearing runs. If that's worn, the new bearing will wear out pretty sharpish. Lisa..................another blonde moment me thinks :puzzled::roll: |
Cheers Nelly, I only had the starter motor pulled out and rebuilt last year, so I'm a but reluctant to do the job until its absolutely necessary. Would leaving the job entail any possible damage at all? Many thanks - Frank |
Frank, if the bearing itself is starting to fail, then it could damage the contact surface of the driven gear. The sprag bearing isn't cheap, but the driven gear is even more. About £140 if I remember right......... |

:P:P:P Well I tried...Can't be brilliant at EVERYTHING! |
Hi Frank Im sure there's a web site that tells you how to change the sprag just type (sprag clutch) on your search engine. I remember looking at the site when I had problems. |
And Frank there are SS related topics in the last two days. Ali are has been posting about suspension on his Superlight and considering the shock from a SSie And as Nelly says you need a tool to hold the alternator otherwise forget trying to do it yourself. |
Thanks Guys, I've rigged up an additional HD live lead so that I can start the bike using a jump starter battery. Once running everything is fine - its just the initial 'cold' start of the day that causes problems. I think the combination of high comp pistons and worn sprag clutch are working against me :( Cheers - Frank |
Frank Ive been posting all the time on SS's just Ive been using the good ole' "invisible mode" recently. Going back to readable version now Hope you get the "sprag clutch" sorted bestest mort:roll::roll: |
Cheers Paul, Busy changing forks etc on my track bike at the moment so the poor old girl is hardly used at the moment... Hope she aint sulking at me ! Franko |
Haaa Haaaaa.... SS mods a go-go, I remember seeing this guys webpage - excellent: http://ccrma.stanford.edu/~peer/Duc/...ragSpring.html Cheers SSTU |
