Valve caps

At scrutineering at Snett I was pulled up for not having metal valve caps. Never had any trouble with plastic ones before. Anyone shed any light on this please?

It's in the ACU rule book - I got pulled up on it in my first season in 2005 so it's been there for a while.
I believe it's because plastic ones can split or wear the threads, exposing the valve.
...or it might just be in there as an easy check to see if you read the rule book!!

I read it,,,,,, this is what it says

6.2 TYRES
1 Th e minimum cross section of tyre allowed for any class is 50mm.
2 Dust caps must be fi tted to all tyre valves.
3 For street tyre classes readily available street tyres only, 1mm minimum tread depth, slicks,
hand cut slicks, and tyres marked “Not for Highway Use” not allowed.
4 Any tyre which, in the opinion of the Technical Offi cial, bears any signs of having sidewall
markings or lettering tampered with will be grounds for immediate disqualifi cation of the rider

As you say no mention of what type of dust caps in the ACU handbook but it is down to the cheif Technical officer at the meeting and for the best part of a decade they have been looking for metal dust caps to be fitted.
Although around 2002/03 at Thruxton Neville the Cheif Tech at NGRRC made me change my metal ones as they were the type that could be used for extracting the valve core after pulling me up at a previous meeting for having plastic ones.
