Transport Puzzle

This is a request for help - ideas, rather than a favour, though. I'll figure it out eventually, but maybe someone will have a brainwave!

I have some (large) bike bits that I need to pick up from Peterborough, more than can be carried on a motorcycle (or four). I don't drive one of them four-wheeled motorbikes with the fully-enclosed seats, so I am going to have to rely on someone doing me a big, big favour. I live in West Sussex, you see, so from Peterborough, that's a fair old trip - it's a lot to ask of someone.
Couriering the parts is not an option as the seller does not wish to risk it (and neither do I really). There's someone at my work who might help me out, but maybe not ... have to wait and see.

The question: how would you solve this problem?
One of the more entertaining ideas we had at work was to ask DSC members to pick the bits up and deliver them somewhere local to them, but gradually closer and closer to home - a DSC relay race, if you like.
"The bits have reached Surrey, only another four weeks to go now I reckon!". Could be fun though ... tracking progress through the Message Board. :D

Anyone have a better idea? Anyone have a worse idea?
Anyone have a freight hauling company?
Enjoy!

Rattler 23-Sep-2004 18:28

speak to madmav!!

Loz 23-Sep-2004 18:37

Good thinking, Tim. A u2u is on its way to madmav as we speak.
Thanks!

Loz 24-Sep-2004 10:13

Anyone heard from madmav recently? He hasn't been "active" on the Message Board since 15 August according to his profile.

Has he got a business telephone number I can reach him on? Just in case email and u2u doesn't work. Thanks anyone!

Gordy 24-Sep-2004 11:11

Loz, Madmav is in the buisness directory under Bikerite.

Hope you get it sorted, Gordy.

Loz 24-Sep-2004 18:50

Cheers, Gordy. Getting there hopefully!

Glyn 24-Sep-2004 19:08

Cheers, Glyn, it may come to that!
:o

TP 24-Sep-2004 19:13

I can do a run around Twickers ...

Loz 24-Sep-2004 19:15

Thanks, tp! I may need to get a map and some pins soon, to help with the planning!

bradders 24-Sep-2004 21:56

loz - let me know when you want it and, if it will fit in a saab (back seats fold down), we can go and get it. Co car fuel - so no cost, just time:)

wekends best tho...not sure iof you have my number from our ride out, if not u2u me and i'll send it 2 you.
Paul

Nigel C 24-Sep-2004 22:02

Nigel, madmav has indeed moved in to another line of work. Not sure what that is at this time.

Jon 25-Sep-2004 00:07

Loz, wouldn't it be easier to hire a car / van for a day.

Jon - definitely it would, but as stated previously, I don't drive!
Lessons to start soon, though ... so everyone, avoid West Sussex if you don't already do so.

Glyn 25-Sep-2004 00:46

lessons start soon!!
bloody hell if you've survived on a bike you don't need no lessons in one of them four wheeled things!!
it's the same but warm and people can see you

KeefyB 25-Sep-2004 07:19

Loz,
I could pick the bits up in Peterburglar and drop them off in Norfhampton or somewhere,if you like.:)

You're right, Glyn, but in a car, you accelerate with your foot! Grabbing great handfuls of throttle just wears out the leopard skin steering wheel cover. Clutch with your foot, change gear with your hand? WTF? Crazy system!

It'll never catch on ...

Keith that's a really kind offer! I've got one or two irons in the fire (might involve kidnapping a fellow DSCer in his car and getting him at burger-point to drive me there). I'll let you know what's happening when I know.

Cheers, mate!

Oi! Peterborough's OK! :)
My home town , an all. Well, it's a damn sight brtter now than when I lived there, way back when.

And compared to Northampton...:smug:

Monty 25-Sep-2004 14:35

If you don't get it sorted give me a U2U, I live 20 miles south of Peterboro and often go there on business, and I go to East Sussex/Kent quite often so I could sort it. I have one of them big 4 wheeled holdall type things.

John

Loz 25-Sep-2004 14:52

Monty, that's a generous offer, thanks very much! I have a plan at the moment (all I need is for the bloke who's selling the bits to get in touch with me again), but if for any reason it falls through, I'll let you know.

My bar tab the next time we all meet up (for the folks who've offered to help) would pay for a new bike. :D
What a club!

skidlids 25-Sep-2004 21:19

Answer to the puzzle would have to have paid for them on your credit card while I was there and I could have taken them back to Oxford with me and then delivered them to Silverstone on Monday. I'm sure someone there could have then got them closer to you Loz. I will send Scott a text to try and get him to contact you, I know he went to see a show in London yesterday so was out for most of the day and evening so would not have been able to respond to any emails

Damn. That would have worked, too. :(

Thanks Kev, I'll wait to hear from Scott.
