bike values: 900FE

chaps - I tried to sell my 900FE on ebay recently - reserved at £3k, Buy-it-now price of £3.5k. Best offer was £2800.

It's a 2000 (X) registered bike in nice condition with full history and under 6000 miles. Seemed cheap to me. Am I out of touch ?

I'll probably stick it on MCN. If anyone could guide me as to a sensible price, I'd appreciate it.

Kind regards
Lucien

Why are you selling Luke? have you any pics?puzzled
Are there any extra's etc?puzzled:

Good Luck!:sing::::sing::

Hi Lucien,

I bought my '96 SL (6,000 miles) in May this year for £2,950 with two paddock stands. May's probably the most expensive time of the year to buy so I reckon it'd be worth about £2,700 now.

The other issue is that, as nice as the FE is, it doesn't seem in so much demand. I looked at 3 in spring and only one of them sold while I was looking. They were all sub £3k.

Having said all that I'd stick with about £2,900 as it'll sell when the right person comes along.

Good luck.

Ali

It's funny that your FE was registered in 2000. The dealer must have had it sitting in his showroom for nearly 3 years before managing to sell it, as FEs came out in '97-98.

Unfortunately what that shows is late model slab sided SS's didn't sell that well especially when the newly designed updated Terblanche SS appeared.

The problem you're gonna find at the top end of the market is unless you get a buyer like Ali who was specifically looking for a slab sided SS people with 3 grand plus in their pocket can get an updated bike. Your ugly old fashioned early nineties machine simply looks dated in comparison. It's a shame, especially if you're selling. It'll no doubt sell eventually but you may well have to lower your expectations and wait a while.

The other alternative, in an ideal world, would be to keep hold of it for another ten years and then watch it start to appreciate in value. Unlike the later one it's a true classic and will soon come to be recognised as such....

A bit harsh Darren but, I agree with what you are trying to say!

P'raps I should have put it in quotes. Since I own one of those "Ugly old fashioned" bikes and will never get rid of it you could probably guess the comments don't reflect my true feelings.

Time of year probably is biggest drawback, wait till spring if you can afford it. I think air-cooled Dukes old and new are a bit of a drag on the market generally; I only got £2600 for 'T' 900ss in pretty good nick last September.

If you want a free advertising outlet try http://www.adtrader.co.uk/
Can't say much about their effectiveness but they have a high paper circulation plus the website.

I read somewhere that good SS/SL/FE's are beginning to hold their value in the States, though they are notoriously obsessed with 'investment value' of their bikes.

moto748 25-Sep-2004 14:36

Well if there's tidy SS/SL's going for that sort of money, my long-term idea to get one when I eventually get rid of the 748 starts to sound like a plan!
I'd been think of an injected one, but if bikes like ali's are available...:)

ali 26-Sep-2004 00:23

Awww shucks, she's gone all embarrased! :) I can see her out the window, gone bright red she 'as....

Go on, get an air-cooled. You know it makes sense. :D

Get out of it Frank! I can see your avatar, and you're hangin' so far off that bike you must have removed half your femur..... :D

Iconic944ss 27-Sep-2004 08:46

:D Thanks for the nice comment but, totally removing both femurs hasnt helped much....

Felt good at Cadwell though !

Will yer look at the curves on FiscusFish's lovely yellow Superlight. What a beaut the carby SS/L is from that angle. And I've got one, but it still makes me dribble when I see a photo like that :P

FiscusFish 27-Sep-2004 22:14

And unfortunately it looks nothing like that anymore.... :sniff::sniff::sniff:

Ian900SLV 27-Sep-2004 22:45

Although the SL is a dated machine, I for one still feel it looks superb from any angle, is deffo a future classic and would only part with mine in exchange for an 888

As for values, I looked at many mint piles of shite till I found mine, If you are in no rush the right buyer will come along who will pay a decent price for the right bike, trouble with ebay is that a lot of people are after summat for nowt:(:(:(

Good luck with the sale

Ian

LukeDuke 28-Sep-2004 19:11

Hi Guys - I think you all make very good points....except for the slab sided bit ! Tsshh! A mate of mine summed up the 'old' carby SS very nicely when he described it as one of the last hand-built Ducatis ! As for those lines - yep - pure Italian style – they are half of the reason I got into Ducati in the first place.

Bottom line is that ebay buyers expect to pay trade money for vehicles - and often they do - until two (one is no good) enthusiasts come along and bid against each other. Example: 1979 Honda CR390 red rocket dirt bike. Normal money in biketrader would be about a grand for what is a nice collectable motocross bike. This one, beautifully original 2 owner bike - £2200 on ebay. Justice !

I'm selling the FE because I've bought another bike - but if I can't sell it this season (which I have to admit is pretty much over now), then hey I'll keep it till next year and maybe get a few more miles out of it in the spring ! I still love the old dog, so I will wait for the money it deserves really. Guess I’ll have to add it to the 1962 Volvo, 1977 Fiat Spider, 1987 Merc SL, 1993 RM250 (virtually unused) and 1976 Kwacker KT250 trials twin-shock – I’m a hoarder see – hate selling anything !

Piccies

Sorry - forgot to add a photo or two:

LukeDuke 28-Sep-2004 19:21

another piccie

LukeDuke 28-Sep-2004 19:21

hmmm...\"slab\" indeed !

edwyun 01-Oct-2004 20:44

LukeDuke:

The problem with getting the what you want for the FE is that most people will not know about all the incremental improvements on the FE over the SL I-V. To most, they all look the same except for the silver color.

The time of year and economy these days doesn't help either.

If you can wait for the right buyer looking for that clean FE, you should be able to sell it for your price.

Some gratuitous pics... :)

migsangel 04-Oct-2004 17:19

Nice pic Edward....

Luke...keep your FE...she is beautiful not matter what anyone tells you...

I love mine and won't trade it for the world...

Good luck selling it...if you do try again...
