What do I need to know...

As I have now drifted over to the dark side, and will soon be tinkering with my new toy, it's got me to thinking about what I will need to do, what I should do, what to look for etc on a 999.

So I have a few questions.... what size pipes come on the 999R? as this is something that will probably get upgraded at some point.

What should I be looking at, anything that will go bang, or cause a problem, typical stuff like oil pressure switch etc, etc.

Also I have a list of things that I need to buy... any ideas, contacts/costs etc appreciated.

T/Day kit, including seat unit, probably black (as it's the colour of choice)

A tank probably... again, so I can get it painted black
Fuel pump? not such a big one, as I can use the current one.

Pipes as mentioned above, air filters, ECU, power commander?

Already got a slipper that I will be putting in, got brembo master cylinders also, and q/shifter

Rearsets? do I/don't I?

I guess hi-level screen also

Pierobon dash/clock mount etc

Anything else I have missed here?

You'll need a friendly bank manager by the sounds of it!!!

Enjoy!

JPM,

I made the move earlier this year to a 999R from a 996R, may god have mercy on its soul!

So far, I've needed a new starter solenoid and it's looking like I've got a small oil leak around the rear cylinder head bolts.

Trackday stuff, from what I've seen they fit where they touch, but I guess that's to be expected. Try e-bay - full kits are going for £150-ish.

Tanks - if you find one, let me know, still a bit rare from my experience.

Not sure how big the standard 999R pipes are, I think they're the same size as all 999 models though.

One word of warning though, like you I intended fitting my quick-shifter to the bike once I got it. Since the 999 uses an entirely different kind of wiring loom and the coils are of the type that are contained in the plug cap I was told it wasn't possible, and I'd have to buy a 999 specific type.

High level screen - don't buy the ducati corse one, they take kidneys as part payment for it.

Rear sets, again DP stuff is terribly expensive if it gets chucked down the road. Sparco seem to be very good value (from demon tweeks) but I haven't bought them yet.

Hope this helps buddy!

Cheers!

Scott

tell me about it.... I was hoping someone (Hint!!) might of done the honourable thing and bought a 999 and have already bought all this stuff, got bored, didn't like the colour, fancied a change, you know... and chuck the stuff on here to sell... but THAT PERSON went all Japanese on me ! ;)

It was fine jumping from the 996 to the 998 as most of the bits were/are interchangeable... but it's a whole different ball pack in the dark side.

Bugger.... I'd of thought the JHP/Techtonics shifter may of fitted... Hmmm..

Just another thing to add to the list of stuff I'll be putting on here eventually then...

I've got a tank for sale if you are interested. If so drop me an email as I have a habit of not checking U2U that regularly.

The Termi 2-1-2 seems to be the best option for the 'R'.You get the ECU and air filters in the kit. With carefull setting up you can get some serious bhp out of the motor.(Ask Everton!)I think the standard system is the same as the 'cooker' 999,i.e assymetrical. The race can that comes with it is very disapointing.
As for screens,I'm using the MRA dub bub, lovely fit, seems to work and I can see all the idiot lights!:D
As someone mentioned before, the 999 uses a CAN wiring system so be carefull fecking abart with the electrics!
Nowt gone wrong with mine,(although it only the 'cooker')apart from a battery replaced under warranty.
Enjoy,you lucky sod.

electricsheep 07-Oct-2004 18:31

I thought that the 999R came with standard pipes and Termi's.

andyb 07-Oct-2004 19:42

Mate, the R comes with a termi decatted front pipe and 102db silencer. The std system is asymetrical, ie the rear pipe is short, small bore, the front is long, large bore.

The real way to go is a full 57mm system and power commander, something you could also run a quick shifter off of. However i thought about this, and if you want i can put you in touch with a full ti 57mm corse system for around £1800, or a 54 mm system for around £1200, but declined as 1) i cant use the power its allready got, and 2) most t/ds are now regulated by noise.

A Pc does smooth out the 7000rpm fuelling flat spot though.

With fairings its all about fitting them and that takes time and effort, i think the £150 ones will be poor, but if thats what you want so be it. ( i dont think so)

As for rear sets i bought from America...superb quality and even with the carriage and tax are good value!

As for availability of spares, i would ask, what was available for the 916/996 to years into the 90s? % Thats unfortunate, but how it is!

andyb 07-Oct-2004 19:43

Oh yeah (keep repeating this) 999R + 57 and PC =155bhp at jhp!

JPM 08-Oct-2004 11:30

Andyb,

Think I know where the 57mm system is coming from, spoke to Johnny Hackett about all this, and he had a few recommendations with the way to go, what I didn't realise was the 03 and 04 exhausts are different because of the s/arm, so quite a few 57mm system coming up for the 03 model at the moment.

T/day fairings, spoke to a friend of mine who has a 999S he bought a kit from up near me (slingshot racing I think) which was somewhere in the region of 250 quid coloured, and fits fine, so that could be sorted there.

And the new record is 156Bhp from John.... crikey! :D

yellowisfriedegg 08-Oct-2004 12:18

For track day fairings beware , ones copied from standard panels will not fit an 04 R , the upper part of the fairing is wider and higher on the R , this is why you can see the idiot lights unlike the other models.

Because the upper part is wider it will not fit on the mounting brackets off the top of the headlight assembly where the mirrors fit.

Also , on the standard bike , the airtube covers are separate bits of black plastic , on the R this is all part of the fairing side , some replica bodywork does not have the airtube cover bit moulded into it so without the black top bit it looks odd.

If the side panel winglets have the wee aerofoil type mountings they are copied from standard panels , the 04 R (and all next years bikes) don't have this type of mounts , the winglets are just fixed top and bottom with self tappers (well , it's self tappers on the R's carbon stuff , I haven't seen the plastic stuff for next years bikes that close up yet)
