Windows XP - Service Pack 2

A question for the PC experts, what is the current view on applying the new service pack. Is it a yes or no?

Many thanks in advance, rgds,

Rob

For me it's a no go - until I've at least scoured some forums on the issue, which I haven't done yet.

I've heard too many bad things and I've just rebuilt my PC for the second time in 2 months - don't want to have to do it again!

antonye 12-Oct-2004 12:48

I've installed it twice and uninstalled it again both times, as it completely blocked all internet connections even though the firewall was turned off!

I had it running for about 3 weeks without problem, then it just decided to stop working. Luckily I had another PC on my home network to check if it was the PC or the net connection. Uninstalling SP2 brought it all back up.

You may have different results, but this is my own experience having installed it on the same machine twice, and got the same results.

i know even less about computers than most things but i installed it; thought that is what you are supposed to do!;
and havnt noticed any differences so far.

I was dubious, but installed it, and had no problems, turned off most of the features anyway, but no probs through my router/firewall etc

yeti 12-Oct-2004 13:07

Worked fine for me

Desmondo 12-Oct-2004 13:40

I did a fresh install of XP with SP2 slipstreamed in. Seems to be a safer way rather than applying SP2 as a separate patch. No probs on 2 comps so far.

psychlist 12-Oct-2004 13:49

Installed SP2 patch few months ago now, no problems whatsoever!

MJS 12-Oct-2004 14:10

I installed it and it seems to have seriously slowed down my wireless internet connection, but turning the firewall off seems to have fixed that.. other than that, I haven't noticed much different... Maybe I'm missing something...:puzzled:

GsxrAge 12-Oct-2004 18:22

I installed it over a month ago no probs so far:cool:

chris.p 12-Oct-2004 21:22

I have installed it on a new rebuild, did not down load but applied on the microsft website for them to send it to me on cd, arrived within a week took ages to install but no problems, did it about a month ago.

Probably half your files mate as all the scheming scumbags in hackers-ville trawl your pc over your super fast coneciton.

I installed SP2 a few eeeks ago and have had no probs. I have a 3rd party firewall and the SP2 one running too and have not had any probs accessing sites.

Col996s 13-Oct-2004 08:53

Installed it on Monday no problems then.
Last evening my p.c would not shut down. It sits there alternating between two screens. One says "installing 1 of 1..." and the other tells me "Do not un-plug or switch off as computer will automatically shut down" Left it on all last night and it did not shut down.
Any one else seen this and is it related to SP2?
If I wish to un-install SP2 do I do this from "add and remove programms"
Any help would be appreciated... Thanks.

I've installed it and have no problems. I run Blueyonder wireless internet connection and haven't noticed anything detrimental speed wise.

ath748 13-Oct-2004 14:32

Did it, absolutely no problems. Didn't even have to change any settings.

fatduke11111 13-Oct-2004 15:01

Had firewall issues when loading mine, I had to uninstall. I'll wait a while until all the bugs are fixed.

yeti 14-Oct-2004 14:28

BLUDDY Microbluddysoft!

No sooner posted that I've had no problems than the damn thing goes and gives me the same problem as Col996s! Two screens that never shut down. Have resorted to doing a system restore which has fixed the problem, but it keeps trying to get me to install the new upgrades. Anybody know of a fix for this?

rcgbob44 14-Oct-2004 21:43

I know of several people at work who have installed it and all of them have blocking e mail and graphics problems

Eamonn 15-Oct-2004 01:27

Installed on one machine (a clean install rather than upgrade) with no problems. Had to turn off the Microsoft wireless software so that my normal Netgear WiFi control panel would work correctly - other than that all is OK.

Second machine to be installed next week.

It does require a bit of work to get the security options configured to your liking, but it seems once done it works just fine. Initial problems with SP2 were incompatabilities with other programs - I belive most of these have now been fixed.

I suspect the main reason business users aren't going for SP2 in a big way (yet) is that you need to work out what security settings you require and disable the functions you don't need. It's easy if you only have one system, but with a few hundred........ :rolleye:

OK, turned the firewall back on now and everything seems to be running smoothly - my update must have coincided with one of NTL's slow patches... So yes, no problems with SP2 here

Road Runner 15-Oct-2004 21:25

Same as you col996s What a pig left the computer on all night the only way was to pull the plug.
I have restored my computer back a week and at least its working and you can shut down ok but its no right will have to get some help with it.
