Socket Size.......help please
 

Need to buy today ... can some kind person advise me on what size socket I need to get to enable me to loosen the rear axle so I can adjust the chain. On an 04 999r type swinging arm. Thanks v much

36MM TORQUE SETTING 180nm.

I know I'm making a big mistake here, but why do you need to loosen the rear axle to adjust the chain on a 999? I just use the tension adjusters on my '03 999S.

I think you will find that you have been NOT adjusting your chain tension ;)

No mention of how to adjust the tension in there, other than:

"Important - Have the drive chain tensioned up at a Ducati Dealer or Authorized Workshop."

Darren: was it normal socket or slim fit? When I checked mine last night the nut seems to be recessed in the swing arm.

I guess you're right, but the chain tension does get adjusted - maybe my axle's loose? ;)

I recall my dealer told me I don't need to slacken off the nut, so I guess we're both wrong!

guest1,a normal socket will fit fine.I think I got mine from Halfrauds.

How do you think those puny adjusters move the rear wheel back without undoing the spindle nut first!
As for taking the bike to a dealer to get the chain adjusted,.....:lol::lol::lol:

guest1 the socket I purchased was a draper expert( £7) with a 1/4 inch adaptor...oh yes....fairly slim surround seem fits fine around the recess axle nut on the Black 'r' type swinging arm.

Loz, if you ain't extracting the p1ss, then there's at least two loose nuts on your bike that I can think of.:D

Hi Dickie. Not taking the mick. Someone I had reason to believe (racking my brains as to who, may or may not have been someone in my local dealer) told me you can adjust without loosening the spindle nut. When I tried to do this a while back, I actually changed the chain tension. So now I'm buying a decent torque wrench and the appropriate socket and checking what's what before I next ride the 999!

Mind you, I haven't tried adjusting the chain since a change of tyres at Cadwell last month which Julian did for me, so perhaps it was just a one-off thing - if I try it now, the adjusters might not budge. I really would like to know the how and why of what happened before.
