new number plates
 

where do you guys get all your show plates from, mine fell off yesterday on the way home from collecting my bike, i now ahve a temporary one made froma old plate ( with the white showing ) and some black door letters

i called in to bridge yesterday and they wouldnt help,they said they make them and i need 2 forms of i.d and bike documents, i gave them the v52, my d-licence and passport and they said thatw as unacceptable. i had to have licence OR passport and a utility bill :devil:, they wont be getting any money off me again, they wouldnt budge even though i could have been pulled and had a £60 or more fine, some customer service they provide.

halfords do plates but they get them made up country so they wont be getting my order either, so now i'd just like to know how you would recommend to a decent plate with maybe a small shadowy ducati logo

Any shop that makes plates with the legal font will ask you for the same details, its the law now so dont blame Bridge.

Show plates can be had from various companies who advertise in the back of MCN, MAL plates are one.

V5 and photo i.d. should be enough to get a plate made. Sounds like Bridge were prob going a bit ott!

Nope, thats not enough. I got one made at Halfrauds, they wanted a utility bill as well and they had to enter all my info into an online data base. A phone bill wasnt good enough! Had to be gas or electric.

what if you lived at home with your parents, no utility bills, no credit cards, just the v5 and driving license??? and we pay taxes to keep this bunch of idiots in power!:flame:

yeah thats fair enough i accept the law but which is worse not having a bill on me or riding with 150 miles with no number plate at all. a passport and driving licence is surely better than a licence and a crappy gas bill, they wont even accept mobile phone bills anymore

all i wanted to do today was show of my new baby but i was too embarresed as i had to use a old plate with tacky lettering

roll on later in the week when the new plate arrives

p.s. how do i stop the bolts vibrating loose as that happen this afternoon too

He is always losing plates off the special, and now also 'mashing' the one on the viffer too!:o
Unfortunate thing is, he makes the plates at work - so knows what the consequences are.
Having chatted to a nice policeman the other week - he agreed what a prob it is becoming, for the law-abiding citizen.

Dont do what happened to AK in May:
eg: lose your plate, when well away from home on a bank hol Sunday early eve. No shops open to make one, not all the correct docs with you either - so you cant get one made up on the Monday on the way home, cos local Halfrauds/factor cannot do it!
Imagine if it had happened on the first day of the four that we were away!
You now HAVE to travel illegally home - which could have disastrous consequences for your license:(

AK says in future if away overnight, he is going to carry a spare in a back pack, and we now also keep a spare in the garage, for each bike.

No need to supply anything, just tell them the reg and give them £15 - £20 and 3 days later, plate through the letterbox. Simple and sorted.

ck cheers for the advice, that was what was worrying me. i didnt want to pay £60+ for something as silly as that, the loud cans, the dark visor i would have accepted the fine on but a fine for trying to solve a problem would ahve been a bit silly.as ive said above i understand the law and think its a good one but refusing someone who has 2 i.d's is stupid and unnecessary in my eyes :flame:

Sorry mate but they didnt refuse you. They had no option, they have to comply with the rules, they have to fill in the database and log every plate they sell. You cant expect them to break the law for you can you?

no but whats more personal than bike documents,a passport and a driving licence, i mean how important is a silly gas bill, will they accept that customs NO but will they accept a passport YES the law makers in this country are stupid, 2 genuine forms of i.d should be enough

Ah but thats not the shops fault is it? I know you are annoyed and i understand why but the shop was only obeying the law.

yeah, its the law thats the main problem, i just cant get my head around wanting a gas bill instead of a passport, strange law in my opinion

I always use Mal plates, they will only sell you a show plate with out you providing them with ID, but if your sensible and go for the plate size just 1/2" down on the legal one it looks near enough right and isn't a blattant two fingers up at the coppers.
Failing that just get them done in the Isle of Man, no ID required and nice 3 legged loggo on one side.

and on my R6 I have 21st Junior TT 2003 along with a Manx flag
all from Mal Plates

have just ordered 1 from them, got my slogan and a shadowy duc corse logo behind, got to be better than the temporary one ive got there at the moment

Only one word of warning from AK about the plates:

If you have a bike REGISTERED since April 04, you should have the correct size plate & spaced & sized letters. If not, Mr policeman may poss bring this into question if you are asked to stop.

A recent utility bill places you at a known address, whereas your passport/licence etc may be a little out of date. That way, when you (and your plate) are caught on camera doing 31mph in a 30 limit, they know exactly where to collect the funds. Ho hum. Just a thought..

No i dont work for Bridge, dont even know where they are!

We got a plate with funny spaced letters for Lynns car from Mal a while back. No id needed.

As far as keeping the plate on (I also have had the same problem), either use sticky tape on the nut side (oooooh) or drill a small hole in the screw bit behind the plate after you have tightened them and pass a thin bit of wire through the hole. Even if the nut works loose it'll still stay on.
By the way, I also tried PTFE tape on the thread but it didn't work.

hey it dont matter as i have 1 ordered from malplates and didnt get caught by the police, i was just angry thats all, at the end of the day i still have my first ducati in the garage and thats what counts

another side to this (perhaps over zealous) behaviour of dealers supplying plates is that they can I believe be held responsible or accesory's to a crime.?

A guy I worked with had his bike number plate cloned which I believe is an enormous problem within the UK, (and the reason why i would never post a picture on this site showing a bike number plate (lets not make it easier than it is for them)). The criminal sees your bike matching the stolen one he has in his lock up and makes up a plate to match your one that he has just seen passing by. It being an actual plate matching the bike description he is less lilkely to be stopped on a suspect check up. Anyway back to the story of the guy i worked with: He was arrested for hit and run and given that it later turned out that the pedistrian was killed and he could not initially remember his whereabouts at the time of the accident he was in serious trouble until he could prove that it was not him. The responsibility was on him to prove that he was his innocent given that the bike involved in the hit and run matched exactly the bike he owned.

my cousin got a letter through from kent police charging her with dangerous parking or something stupid, probelm being we live in cornwall and she had to prove her innocence, luckily she married a traffic cop and they were at the policemans ball the night of the alleged offence so had 50+ cops as witnesses,its now going through proceedings but i think she'll be ok on this 1

This may not be popular with those with something to hide but the need to prove identity would be much easier if the idea if National ID cards went ahead.After all we already have ID numbers. In my job I often need people to prove their identity and such a card would make it easier both for them and me

sounds good to me as it saves the hassle ive had trying to make my new bike road legal again
it would also stop all the other dodgy things like no car insurance, no tax, any convictions and stuff, would be okay with me

On the subjecy of no car insurance I like the idea that have in Fire where cars display an insurance disc as well as a tax disc. After all the insurance can expire a few days after the tax disc is issued

The biggest problem with insurance is that some people dont have any. So why not include third party insurance in with the road tax? Then if you want more like fully comp you are free to pay extra if you want. On the tax disk on the screen you have an expiry date so its obvious to anyone that you've got insurance.

Good idea except that the Tax and Insurance don't always run out at the same time which is why as I said I like the method that they use in Eire (even if I did mistype it in my previous post) where they display an insurance disc along with the tax disc

My mate Adrian who has raced my bikes at the TT the last few years always gets his plates there when his girlfriend returns home to visit her parents as she's a Manx lass. I will ask her.

What i meant was that the road fund licence also includes third party only insurance as part of the yearly fee. If you want fully comp then you buy that yourself. That way there would be no chance of being crashed into by an uninsured driver.

Its a system they have in operation in Australia, you get a new sticker for the windscreen each year, and no need to buy insurance unless you want to. The vehicle is insured rather than the driver.

Would that mean if I sold my bike after say 6 months the new owner would get 6 months insurance that I have paid for?

Yes it would but i guess you could claim it back like you can do for road tax now.
