one for you Kent guys. Can anyone tell me the best locations in the kent area. I'm looking to buy a house down there and would like to know the areas to avoid. Best rural areas, some where one would retire to. What would I be expected to pay for property. Thanks. |
you dont have to go that far for broadband jon:lol::lol: |
:puzzled: - and whats wrong with surrey, may one ask? C |
thats a real tough one, it depends what your priorities are, some of kent has problems with eduation, so have you any children. what do you need to access. trains- motorways access to ports or london traveling time etc. the are a vareity of demographics within kent as well as some areas that are week in industry. so is employment an issue? some ofvthese things may not be an issue for you but you might want to consider them because of the resale of property in the future. id be happy to send you a few local property papers if it would help. if you found something that catches your eye id be happy to point out the strengts and weeknesses as far as i can. regards bungi |
Well we live in Tunbridge Wells..... ... which is a great place to live. However, property prices tend to be directly proportional to how easy it is to get to London as this is still on the boundary of commuting distance - and also how good the schools are. So if you are thinking of retiring you might want to go a bit further south or east. Too far to the east tends to be flatter countryside, Kent/Sussex borders are lovely (I'm biased of course) and there's some really pretty villages in the middle. North/north-west Kent is quite industrial (that's where I come from!). I'll happily post you the property pages from our local paper which will cover this area but not a whole lot further east. U2U me if you want the paper or to chat about it. Michael is an architect so he probably has a better grasp of the types of houses prevalent in the area. If you are in the area house-hunting, let us know.... |
Thanks for the info. I'm not interested in London, I have not dependant children I don't like neighbours. I like seclusion. We have dogs and would not want to offend any immediate neighbours. Can't remember the last time I travelled by bus or train. I would like to rent it out though until I retired, to help pay for itself. |
But you haven't finished doing up your house yet!!! |
i guess you need to have identified an idea of budget. size of house ie number of bedooms etc. you might not ravel by rail etc but if your thinking of renting it, it could be a factor that would need to be considered as local industy etc. if you u2u me your address id be happy to send you some local property papers. |
It NEVER rains in Kent! Oh no, sorry. That's just Dartford tunnel :P |

If not why not someone has got to pay my wages:) If you take my advice you will avoid Ashford unless you fancy living on a building site. |
I lived in a village called Plaxtol and went to school in Tonbridge which was pretty nice place to be. Problem with Tun Wells is that you have a split personality as you don't know whether you're lving in Kent or Sussex!!!! |
Rubbish Webby. RTW (ROYAL Tunbridge Wells to you plebs  ) is fairly and squarely Kent. Mind you, that does mean trekking across three counties to get to work...... [Edited on 19-10-2004 by lizzie] |
Lizzie that sounds like something written by the famous "Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells" Having to deal with some of the charming young people from there as they travel back from Tonbridge late on Friday & saturday nights "Disgusting of Tunbridge Wells" would be more appropiate |
Sorry Rocker.... .... but I was 'disgustED of TW' on Saturday night - and I know it's not your fault but..... left for a reunion 10 mins from London Bridge at 5.15 on Saturday night. Checked the online timetable beforehand. No mention of any maintenance works. Got to the station in plenty of time for the 5.36; should have got me to LB at 6.20ish, loads of time to meet them at 7, table booked for 7.30 (well it was that or an hour later which would have been cutting it tight). No sign of any of the trains on my timetable. Oh, maintenance works. Bugger. Next train to LB 5.40 via Redhill, what's that 30 min longer journey? Oh well, plenty of time. Time passes. Indicator board says 5.40 now due at 5.48. Just as well, queue for tickets about 20 mins long, only one chap serving and NOBODY else appears to be about. Indicator board now says train due at 5.48 will terminate at Tonbridge. Loads of people milling about wondering why there is no information about what is happening and why the staff seem to be hiding. Eventually discover that we will have to get bus from Tonbridge to Sevenoaks. Not looking good. Hang on a minute, apparently the 6.21 - the next train after the delayed 5.40 - will go straight through to LB. Just about get us there on time. Except indicator board says 'delayed'. How delayed? No idea and still no-one about to ask. By this time it is 6.10. The indicator board still says the 5.40 will be in at 5.48. Clearly not. So much for modern technology. We eventually gave up at about 6.20 when it became apparent that no-one was prepared to give us any information about the 5.40 or the 6.21 and whatever happened we wouldn't get there in time (and if we did, how the hell were we going to get home), resigned ourselves to not seeing the friends we'd not seen for a year for another year, got a refund and went out for dinner in Tunbridge Wells instead. Throughout the whole episode, the only member of staff prepared to talk to anyone was the guy selling tickets, but that involved queueing forever and a day and he didn't really do much more than look at the indicator board and tell us what it said. There was one other member of staff hiding on the other platform despite no trains arriving that side either. The indicator boards were worse than useless in that they made 'promises' which bore no resemblance to reality. There were loads and loads of people waiting patiently; I guess they had no choice. I've no idea when a train finally arrived; we would have heard it if it had been within 15 minutes or so of our leaving the station as we bumped into a mate and stood and chatted for a while... So, rant over - if you are thinking of moving down this way Jon, be careful! |
You can't trust that lot at TW now those nice guys at Tonbridge are a different breed alltogether. Why one even rides a Ducati seriously it should not have happened and I'm passing on you comments to the Station Manager. If my staff had acted like that I would have certainly given them "suitable advice" For future reference if you are planning your trip on line go to www.sotheasterntrains.co.uk NOT National Rail Enquiries who are now a seperate company. BTW I was in Stafford for the classic bike show on Sat/Sun so it wasn't me:) [Edited on 19-10-2004 by Rocker] |
