Vented clutch cover

I'm thinking of getting a carbon vented clutch cover, something like the one in the attached picture.

Can I just do a simple swap over with the OE one I have on at the moment, or is there anything else I need? Bit of a simple question, hope it only needs a simple answer!

Thanks,

Ade.

Nope, that's it - just undo the bolts of one and take it off.

However, the subject of carbon covers has come up a few times, and it's general opinion that these really aren't worth having as they offer very little protection should you suffer a drop, even at standstill.

In my opinion you'd be better off going for a vented full billet cover from somewhere like http://www.TecMoto.co.uk/ for only £99.87!

JPM 25-Oct-2004 16:23

It's a simple swap, nothing else needed, but if it were me, and this is my personal choice I'd avoid a carbon clutch cover, especially a vented one, simply because if you ever end up chucking your bike down the road, on the r/hand side, say goodbye to your clutch, billet is the way to go.

m1keyp 25-Oct-2004 16:23

The only thing is that it may not protect the clutch if you drop it.

I went for this instead having been warned off a carbon cover.

An echo!!!!

Sorry this one

ath748 25-Oct-2004 16:38

OK, so carbon is not really the best way to go then!!

I've had a look at the Tecmoto ones and am impressed, but I am worried that the wide open gaping holes let in loads of dirt and other cr@p off the road. Is this something to worry about unnecessarily?

JPM 25-Oct-2004 16:44

Not really to be honest, your fairing covers the front half anyways...

JHP do a billet vented one, which is far less open

ath748 25-Oct-2004 17:07

OK, thanks for that. Another one for the Xmas list then!!

JPM 25-Oct-2004 17:18

You do realise with a vented open cover you'll need a BLING pressure plate too! ;)

And stainless springs and cups

chris99 25-Oct-2004 17:23

Sod all that! Just get a posh slipper to er slip in there:P

ath748 25-Oct-2004 17:51

Hmmm, I think the xmas list just got longer.

So let me ask the question again.....

What bits do I need to put a vented clutch cover on that will look good?! So far:

Clutch cover (obviously)
Pressure plate
Stainless springs and cups
.......anything else? Not really after slippers, smoking jkt is enough for me,

And where would you recommend getting it from/your opinions?

Thanks folks.

I find that Spareshack provide an excellent service and have a good range see http://www.spareshack.com/index.htm

deej 25-Oct-2004 18:19

being a complete technical novice how easy is it to change all thos ebits over as the billett covers and bling bits behind do look very nice and may just go on my xmas list too

ath748 25-Oct-2004 18:24

I've had a look in the Spraynes manual and it doesn't look too hard:

Unscrew bolts
Take cover off
Slacken clutch springs and remove
Remove pressure plate

Replace all the above and put back together - not too hard would be my guess.

JPM 25-Oct-2004 18:26

I think 3 bolts hold the cover, and then 6 for the springs on the pressure plate

30 min job, couple of allen keys, voila

Road Runner 25-Oct-2004 21:00

Very Simple to change the clutch cover 10 mins max. leave the rubber casket off though.
and be prepared for the extra noise. it will be loud very loud
:lol::lol:

Then there's these

these

nelly 25-Oct-2004 21:17

and this...........

I know I'm biased :frog: , but IMO, these are the strongest covers and plates you can get. You could go down without a cover on and that pressure plate would hold up and you'd not snap a single spring pillar.
They aren't the cheapest, not by a long shot, but they do work and look a lot more expensive than they cost

You fitted yours yet, or is it still on the coffee table Tony :sing:

rockhopper 25-Oct-2004 21:23

After Loz lowsided at Rockingham and snapped off all the spring pillars i certainly wouldnt even think about a carbon cover - and he was running a standard one!

Nah, it's on the mantlepiece! In a frame ...

I've got the bike pulled apart at the moment so it doesn't have a tank, airbox, fairings .... let alone a clutch cover ...

Next week it will though, and a new set of tyres ...

Loz 25-Oct-2004 21:35

That's it! Blame me!

I am definitely interested in a stronger than standard clutch set up after my experience at Rocky. No carbon cover for me.

Maybe some training wheels, too.

deej 25-Oct-2004 21:56

how much for the cross protect cover then nelly , im very interested if funds will permit

m1keyp 25-Oct-2004 23:29

Consider this one

ath748 26-Oct-2004 11:29

Nelly,

Very very interested in the pressure plate.......go on.....how much?

rcgbob44 27-Oct-2004 00:20

748
Here`s a DP one on my 998

Road Runner 27-Oct-2004 12:24

I took mine off Rob too noisey you could here it coming half a mile away had to keep the clutch pulled in at trafic lights as atracts to much attention from plod... is it any quieter with the anodised pressure plate ?

FiscusFish 27-Oct-2004 13:12

No.

The noise is caused by the clearances between the clutch plate tangs and the basket. The more the clutch gets used, the wider the clearances become, the louder the noise gets. Replacing the basket and plates quietens the noise for a while but is always comes back.

Aluminium plates with an aluminium basket and the standard insulated cover is probably the best you'll get.

rockhopper 27-Oct-2004 14:03

For trackdays i take the rubber gasket out and use some spacers that Nelly gave me with the standard cover. I'm running alloy plates in the stock steel basket and to be honest its way too noisy for me and my bike is rather loud anyhow cos of the cored cans! I was going to leave it like that for the road but i couldnt stand it so its now back on the standard cover complete with gasket.

TP 27-Oct-2004 14:06

I ran spacers on my OEM cover all the time, and with 54mm Sil Motor cans the package was a bit noisy ;)

Now I have Nelly's new one but I haven't run it with it on yet. It doesn't have a fuel tank on it ... or any bodywork ....

This weekend though, with new tyres as well :)

Road Runner 27-Oct-2004 15:56

Well I guess its not just me then that finds vented covers to noisy
Tecmoto half vented cover ( silver ) going cheap....:lol:

ath748 27-Oct-2004 17:23

Right chaps - I am now a little more concerned over the noise issue. I know that a vented/open clutch makes the more mechanical nuts and bolts sound, but is it that much noisier?

I don't mind a little extra noise, I really just wanted it to look better than the OE one.

Ade.

Rocker 27-Oct-2004 17:53

IMHO it doesn't make "too" much more noise although Sue says she can't hear her Hornet(with Scorpion can) running when it is alongside my Multistrada
The other day I stopped alongside some old Ford at the lights and the guy started looking worried. I'm sure he thought that his engine was about to expire:roll:

deej 27-Oct-2004 22:55

    fords

rcgbob44 28-Oct-2004 21:23

If you don`t like the vented type then go for a nice D.P C/F one.

Road Runner 28-Oct-2004 21:33

Rob I love the vented one I think they look fantastic with the red anodised pressure plate its the noise thats the problem, but I love the sound of the pipes more but then Im old
