SORN - Fines .... What am I going to be fined? I think Tim had this last year from memory ... I'm putting the 996 on a SORN BUT, I've only just found out about having to have this done within 14 days of your tax running out. So I'm 14 days over that now :( So how much am I going to be fined? There are some STUPID rules in this country .... I know I know, Heathrow is just down the road .... stay on topic! [Edited on 2-11-2004 by tp-996] |
The notes on the back of the V11 say that "If you do not relicense or make a SORN declaration you could be fined up to a THOUSAND pounds(!) or 5 times the annual rate of duty, whichever is greater." The sad thing is that the folks getting fined are people such as yourself and/or have simply forgotten to tax the vehicle. They dont catch the gits that never tax a vehicle from day one, along with MOT's insureance etc. |
 Just another tax on the law abiding public!!!:o DC.:burn: |
The standard fine as long as you vehicle hasn't been spotted on the road is about £25 - 50 quid. |
I forgot to send off my SORN paperwork for my bike last year. Think it was something like £25 fine so sent it off with the proper paperwork. Ignore the £1000 fine stuff, it's just scaremongering unless you never declare SORN. |
I had my Kawasaki off road but misplaced it , nothing was said. It was genuinely off as no insurance the lot and I didnt want to ride it either. Found form by accident something like 7 months later and took it in . They were fine about it.:) |
I thought you had 28 days to retax or sorn, not 14 !! if so,i like you will gettin a brown envelope, "Proper B**tard a tell thi ! |
Well I've just spoken to the DVLA - you can declare the vehicle SORN over the phone on 0870 240 0010. They can issue you a fine if they have not received a SORN notice or a tax renewal from 14 days after the tax runs out. The way she explained it was that they can do it from day 1 but only check after 14 days. I have to write a grovelling letter to my local DVLA office, which is in Wimbledon, explaining how long I've had the bike off the road, why I didn't register it as SORN sooner etc etc and hope they choose not to fine me. BUT, I will have to pay the tax arrears up until the SORN is accepted! *******S!!! Just one more point ... this is the second time I've had to phone the DVLA about something since I've been in the country and their customer service and attention to detail has been impeccable, both times. Last time one of the ladies there went way out of her way to help me and this lady tonight was courteous, understanding and just a good all round egg! |
You should have called them to question why you hadn't received your Sorn confirmation, as you had posted your Sorn 4 wks ago. |

Now, the reason you are Cisco and I am Microsoft is clearly because you are smarter than me! |

Not saying I'm smarter, just playing the DVLA at their own game. |

I know mate. Having said that, I haven't written the letter yet ... |
Yip best trick in the book TP............... writing in asking why your confirmation of SORN has not been received, send it registered post........ I guarantee you a bucket full of Castlemaine you will not here another peep out of them.............. £3-4 quid to send the letter registered worth every penny. Regards ScottyB |
Perhaps it might be easier to just pay for the tax for the year and declare it next year (or even cheekier, declare it SORN next month and reclaim the tax!). £33 guaranteed v potentially £1,000? Better the devil you know.... |
i chopped in my 996R for my 999R back in May and forgot to send off my part of the v5 notifying the dvla that the bike is owned by a motor trader. Received notification from dvla when the tax had run out which reminded me to send off v5 but i obviously didnt do it with the required time scales. I got a £40 fine letter a month or so back closely following a letter thanking me for informing dvla of change of owner, so i ignore £40 fine letter thinking that it was all sorted. Just got a letter telling me that i am being taken to court and the fine is now £80!:flame: For a bike that is neither mine or on the road! |
Chillo Had same when I traded the 996 to a dealer. He said I need do nothing with the logbook as he would take care of it. Gopt the same £40 fine. Wrote a letter to DVLA statin he had said he would sort it and I need od nothing and named him. Rang him and called in a soon to be censored word or ten and got a letter from DVLA within the week to say they would take it up with him. No fine, no worries. TP, option of taxing the bike and cancelling after less than a month is a damn good idea. Regards the 'sorn was lost in the post', dont you have to hand em in at the post office and get a receipt now? Sure I saw this somewhere?????? :burn: |
