The riskiest thing YOU\'VE done?

A natural progression from Lily's thread ... what is the riskiest thing you've ever done (that you will own up to?)

I was just thinking about this and I don't know what it is for me but I've done stuff that I would consider risky .. mostly cool, but I guess risky

1. Rappeled out of a blackhawk helicopter into water (that was FUN!)
2. Accelerated freefall skydiving course
3. Abseiled forwards (Sugar glide, just dive off forwards hanging on to your rope wahey ....) off a 100m building in the centre of Brisbane
4. Dived with sharks both inadvertently and intentionally (and I'm not talking grey nurses here either)
5. I came to live in England :D
6. Told my ex-girlfriend she was 'chunking up' when I was ****ed once :o

There's probably more, like getting a bike when I was 18 - looking back now that was pretty high risk considering the stupid stuff I did on it.

What about you?

dickieducati 03-Nov-2004 18:55

havnt really left much for us to top you with have you;)

Lily 03-Nov-2004 18:58

hmmm... well there's the obvious given my lack of natural riding ability and how accident prone i am - getting a motorbike!!

I have skied and boarded in some pretty stupid places and have actually caused a mini avalanche
Kayaked on a river in flood known to be very very dangerous (in fact make that kayaked in some pretty stupid places full stop)
Abseiled forward down 100ft building.. on a mountain bike!!!
swam with sharks (only liccle ones though)
Cliff diving in windy conditions
stood in front of a moving car ;) :P

ali 03-Nov-2004 19:34

Not a lot on bikes....but;

'boarded flat-out down a glacier known for it's thin powder and many crevasses.
Gone looking for a riot in Caracas and found one.
Cliff jumping into shallow water when young.
Played with my genes in the early 90's.
Tried to keep up with someone on wets at TA3.....:o

I'm sure there's some medical term for risk-loving folk like us. I'd look it up but I'm too busy juggling hand-grenades while practising stoppies on a harley.:D

Cheers,

Ali

done the skiing, boarding, parachuting thing, but the riskiest (most stupid) thing i have done is swimming.

i was on a windsurfing, waterskiing, sailing type holiday in italy with my now wife and another couple. me and the other guy wandered off down the beach in the surf just generally mucking about in the waves. after a while we had gone quite away from our beachfront and into a surf bay. we hadnt realised how far out we had got and i decided to head for shore. when i got there i realised my friend still out there and in apparent trouble. i swam out to him with him going out of view a few times. i was crapping myself by now. i got to him and he said he couldnt get back so i grabbed hold of him and pulled him in a bit so he could get a bit of pull from the sea bed and get in.
only trouble is now i couldnt get back. i view myself as a strong swimmer but the current was taking me out and i was tiring quickly, everytime i managed to touch the bottom and make a foot or so i was pulled back further. i some how managed to gain some distance and eventually get to shore. i literally dragged myself up the beach and collapsed next to my mate totally exhausted and unable to move for a quite a while.

it soulds very innocuous but that is the only time in my life where i really thought i had had it. i honestly dont think i would have made it back had i beed even 5 feet further out.

How about 'Adrenaline Junkie' ?? Not really a bonafide medical term, but I like it !:D

I have led an extremely boring life compared to you guys... most risky thing I have done is entrust my life into the hands of Dave and his various motorbikes over the last 11 years.... antics like 187 mph as pillion on his Hayabusa and 120mph wheelies also pillion on his R1, various scratching with other bikes ( also 2 up ) and we ALWAYS won, and the race we had with a TVR Chimeara 2 up on the YZF and they never lost us ! Going round the 'magic roundabout' the wrong 2 up with my knee almost on the ground !!

I could go on but, it is all incriminating stuff and makes him sound like a hooligan ! ( which he is really )

Healthwise, the riskiest thing was having a 20mph crash on a minimoto whilst 30 weeks pregnant with our son ! ( thank god no harm was done )

But still very boring compared to you guys !:(

GsxrAge 03-Nov-2004 22:23

Been lost in a snowstorm at night in winter in the cairngorm mountains,on my own, thought I was going to die!,would have been my own fault.

Struck the wing mirror of an oncoming car with my shoulder while doing a cocky overtaking maneouvre, that really quietened me down on the road.

Forgot / failed to buckle up whilst practising anti-ambush drills in a Sea- King helicopter, banked over, door open and me hanging on for dear life to the seat, fully togged up, with my sergeant hollering blue-murder at me.

Live firing exercise in Sennybridge with a complete toŁŁer with a run away GPMG.

Listened to a girl friend when she said "It's ok, I have taken the pill"...9 months later....!

Got somewhat geographically embarrased for 2x days in the Cordiella Blanca (northern Peru) solo trekking.

Being presented with a knife wielding gang on a bus, after dark on the Mexican lawless side of the US border, and being rescued by a deaf-mute Mexican midget; seriously.

Countless stupid overtaking manouvers on the bike.

Saying "I love you" to a married woman.

Burning down a hay barn - aged 12 (?)

Competing against the outgoing Ghurka regiment in a hot-curry eating contest.

yeti 04-Nov-2004 12:18

During lovemaking, told my wife she wasn't as good a s**g as her sister...........

yeti 04-Nov-2004 12:21

In truth defusing a 2nd world war bomb in Germany. It was one of ours that we had dropped on the nearby airfield. They wouldn't let us blow it in situ cos of the collateral damage, and it was so unstable we didn't dare move it. Not a bundle of laughs that one, but when you take the Queens shilling you don't get much say in the matter.

I forgot about those - they weren't fun either!

desmojen 04-Nov-2004 16:55

Golly, what an interesting bunch we are!!
For me, similar wave style antics to Dickieducati in france, windsurfing in a force 8 gale in Tarifa, wing walking on a biplane, and racing!
we love it don't we!!

yeti 04-Nov-2004 18:59

Did see a guy get sucked into the intake of a running jet engine once, that was pretty exciting for him. Luckily the jet didn't like the taste and spat him out again breaking both his knee's.

NBs996 04-Nov-2004 19:17

played chicken in a Venture at 800ft, other pilot turned the wrong way... have no idea how we missed :o

not gonna admit the worst one tho!

aws 04-Nov-2004 19:57

Lots of my mates had call sign "Felix".
They had some fun stories to tell, esp in NI and Cyprus.

Once decided that a short-cut across a RA shell impact area was the only way to make up lost time on a black-out night nav-ex. My platoon never did see the humour/ logic in it once they twigged to it! Lost one guy downstream as he stepped into a swollen river during a crossing and he disappeared from view. Close call - rather him than me! Shouldn't have been a such short arŁe!

Got hounded / shadowed out of Vietnam in '91 - now that was surreal - as I was carrying papers that I'd smuggled out of a "rebelling" monastery and they knew pretty much so.

Seeing a Vango Force Ten tent, with storm flaps, that not minutes before I'd been keeping dry within, get blown off the ridgeline right in front of me in the Brecon Beacons. With a guy inside still!

Did a runner from the plod when I was 18 co I had a slack chain. How sad. Went passed my mate in disbelief going the other way with panda car in tow.
Me and my mate offshore circuit racing flipped it in final in Penzance him getting stuck underneath and me pulling him out thank god. Still my best buddy18yrs later.
Raced in Guernsey powerboat festival as the smallest class and struggled to get over the start line as the start boat caused such a bowave it filled our boat up with water and ripped my fullface lid off my head int the back of the boat. We then had to bildge and race in force 7 with a 12 ft swell. We got the biggest trophys ever. It was scarey.
Got married

dave s 04-Nov-2004 20:40

got married for the 3rd time!!!:o:o

Bloody hell, just read some of these posts and realised what a sheltered ,safe and priviledged sheltered life i've lead.

is it just Ducati riders that are mad i ask myself or is life just full of looneys?

I thought i'd done a few dodgy things but i feel seriously sedate and boring in comparison.

Maybe the old adage of the man who has a real big story to tell keeps quiet rather than loud mouthed gob *****es like myself. Not just tongue in cheek comment but i feel humbled with previous comment as to risk. I take my hat of to you.

MAD.

K13 glider, on final approach on first solo, to high and to close to runway threshold, came in all crossed up, tore the undercarriage completely off. Needless to say I was on check flights for a while after that one.

Bloody good post this one.:lol:

Jon 05-Nov-2004 23:09

Not so much me as my flamin brother. Back in theearly 70's when Ted Teeth was in power. He put us all on a 3 day week:bouncy::sing:

So to make up our money we worked part time for a auto component sealing company. They sealed casting of water pumps, cyclinder heads, etc.

All the stuff was put into large wire baskets, about 6' high by 3' dia.
You had to get inside to reach the components at the bottom levels. While I was inside my brother put the lid back on and lifted me over a boiling vat of oil. The boiling oil is used to cure the sealing compound. I was absolutely shi??ing myself, and him laughing his head off while dropping closer and closer to the oil. At the time, if I had got a gun I would have shot him dead I was that scared. As soon has he had lifted me back onto the ground, he shot off like a whippet. Might have been due to the fact I was doing a guerilla impersonation at the time.

deej 05-Nov-2004 23:46

i went to work at my present employers, thats very risky and i wished i hadnt have bothered !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

other than that taking my bike test was quite risky

oh and getting my mortgage now that was risky, very risky

Fordie 06-Nov-2004 01:21

The riskiest thing to me was not so much what happened to me but to other that i have seen. Men frozen to death on a mountain side , sweeped the there death when river crossing , blown over a cliff in high winds whilst carrying 70LB of kit, parachutes failing to open, All though I have had my share of "risks" like tangling up into some one's parachute in the dark of night and just managing to make some kind of landing that I could just walk away from , to be set alight and spend three months in hospital, not nessasarly some thing i have volunteered to do ,just a few incidents that one has to get through in this thing we call life. Most risks are calculated some are not . have fun 4D
