thank god for warrenty £££££££ Hello all, my 999 went in for EOBD warning light and misfire ( running like a bag of shi* ) and news came back today that the crank shaft bearings are shot and poss main bearings !!!!!! gob smacked is not the right word, it only had 3,756 miles and only 13 months old. NOT VERY GOOD IS IT ? even although under warrenty. I will keep you all in touch with the final damage etc. At least the bike is in good hands Bridge at Andover. I will be looking into this extra warrenty that i read somewhere here ! one pi**ed off bikeless phillip. i might have to buy a cheapish 748/ 916 about £3k anyone ? |
Sorry mate thats bad news.....hope they get sorted before next summer !!:( |
Bad news m8. What exactly were symptoms? Mine runs like **** for the first mile or so then goes as normal after that. |
That's tough! That bike is still new, I reckon Ducati should replace your bike never mind repairing, that should be taken away and fully analysed. Even so no courtesy bike? |
Not like cars is it! |
Hello all, yes totally unexpected, went in with electrical problem and ended up with this problem, the only signs was a whinning noise from the engine, ducatis have so many noises going on with the dry clutch, cans etc and being a V twin. But obviously to the trainned ear it was obvious. It had only done about 1K since it was last in at a ducati dealer so happened that quick, i have heard of 3 the 749,s going the same way with under 2k and showing copper on the shells !!!!!! Anyway i have a good chap working on it and is keeping me informed as he progresses through so will keep this thread up to date. Regards Phillip :barfy: |
Hi all, just giving you all an update as i said i would, 2 days after delivery of the bike to Bridge in Andover all parts have been ordered and should be here in approx 2 weeks , so i think that is very good considering it is quiet a big job this engine rebuilding !!!!!! Anyway the Service Manager phoned today to say that the main reason for the crankshaft and main bearings going was that the crankshaft shimms were set to tight from the factory, this has had a couple times to other bikes so i have heard, anyway all well underway now and all work under warrenty. I must admit that so far i am very impressed with Ducati Bridge they dont mess about. As we all know sometimes it is difficult trying to find a good Ducati Dealer and workshop, so will let you all know what happens here and the prices for the service which is also being carried out at the same time. Regards Phillip Mace ;) |

Good to hear that there's progress, even though it's beyond your control. Better it's now rather than mid-summer. Free storage for a couple of weeks then! Any talk of general recall from Ducati? I is worried |
Bad luck Phillip. Are we too British? If you spend that much on a piece of equipment and it goes pop for a known fault, should we not be looking at at least a courtesy bike of similar standing, ie not a Monster, and some compensation from Ducati, (not the poor dealer that has to sort it out)? It'll no doubt be sorted by the dealer, but how long were you without the bike? If it's your only mode of transport and you had to hire a car or take public transport, should warranties not cover that? (or do they?). Hope it comes back 'like a new bike' Phillip WeeJohnyB |
Hi All, yes Alan your right, but what worries me is what if this happened just after the warrenty ran out !!!! I will not be contacting Ducati UK YET until the bike is back and i am happy with it all ( i have total confidence in Bridge Andover ) Its just Ducati they should be making communications with me regarding the poor standard of workmanship envolved in such an expensive peice of equipment which has been designed to be used on the public roads worldwide, and letting thier customers risk thier lives because if these bearings had gone tits up and sized whilst on the public roads !!!! well i would hate to think of the results ESPECIALLY WITH ONE OF MY SONS ON THE BACK, it is quite bad considering that apparently it is a problem that Ducati are aware of and as such should be useing some kind of traceability system ( ISO 9001 ) to track down the faulty parts or inexperienced member of staff for retraining for shimm measurments etc !!! This would not be difficult to do and then issue a recal to those bikes effected, as i said i will be contacting Ducati direct all in good time and will be expecting no demanding some compensation. And yes Johny your so right it is all left upto the dealers to sort it out and take the shi* from the customer, you would think that any bad publicity is the last thing they need at the moment looking at there sales figures for last year so would go out of there way to help, apoligies and assist the customer so they dont get ****ed off, mud sticks !!!!! and bad news travels fast. Will update as things move along Phillip Mace:puzzled: |
Hi all iv been following this thread with interest as my 749r is down at bridge in andover aswell and has been for the last 5weeks, while riding back from the last world sbk at magny-cours i developed an oil leak from around the clutch cover area and the eobd flashing on a few times but the oil warning light never coming on. I myself am a fully trained tech working for a yamaha dealer and i kept checking oil level and got the bike back to portsmouth and from there in a van back home, i also have had great service from ducati andover and more so the service manager dean who rang me on friday 5th nov to say he doesnt know why but the seal for mine is on back order and will be about 2weeks, if it gets hear then and is fitted straight away then that will be 7weeks in total waiting for an oil seal for a bike that is only 6 mounths old to date. Do you all think this is acceptable im really interested in your opinions. I cannotfault the service at the moment from bridge and i know how ducati,s play up a bit but should i be due a bit more better treatment than this? IM SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR BIKE PHILLIP I KNOW HOW YOUR FEELING MATE. |
Hi Boyo, you have my sympathy mate 7 weeks for an oil seal is unreal and not acceptable. i shall be letting rip at Ducati after the situation is resolved as like you i dont think it is good enough they should be trying to look after thier customer base in the uk, i bet this would,nt happen in the states as this is were they are now trying to really expand the Ducati market. Dean is the chap i am dealing with at Bridge in Andover and cannot fault him or the company so far !!!!, Boyo if your duke is red with the white number board on the front then i seen it down there. I shall keep you all updated with the saga as it goes on. I would be very interested in hearing from any others with a similar problem Regards Phill:sniff: |
you chaps should have been given replaced bikes. no way would i want that bike back, shims tighit bull ****.a baby can set the bottom end up. sounds like bad batch off, main bearings. they should want the bike back . what else could be wrong.:flame::flame::flame::flame: |
A mate had been on the factory tour where they the tour guide proudly told them they are building the motors in under 45mins. That doesn't inspire confidence really, its becoming more apparent that ducati are playing the numbers game and less the building a few exotics hand built/set up by craftsman. for me personally i don't want too but i could jump ship with whats going on at Ducati these days, I didn't pay nearly 20 grand for a bike to be thrown together as fast as possible. |

Yeah,but are'nt the 'R's hand built by Ducati Corse?:puzzled: |
Not sure if the `R`s are built in the corse bit anymore,I know the Foggy rep was, like we`ve said before KeefyB "they`re more handbuilt than a Ho#$a but not as hand built as they were", there was no sign of any `R`s being put together in the corse bit when I visited last month. My official dealer has replaced quite a few sets of bearings on the 999`s,the `tang`which locates the plain bearing is very small and can let the bearing spin inside the big end, this seems to happen regardless of mileage. PS.Being hand built is no guarantee quality:rolleye: |
The 996/998/748 R's were built by Ducati Corse.Hence the Corse emblem on the seat unit.:) |
i got the "impression" when i visted the factory that Ducati corse were swamped with MOTOGP and SBK work - and that was last year !- they will have been EXTRA busy this season with the number of WSBK engine failures/motogp development. |
Hello all, as promissed i am bringing you upto date with this saga, the bike is now fixed and sorted out runs like a dream and 100 % full credit to Bridge at Andover and Dean and his crew first class job they even cleaned my bike for me ! With regards to the original fault which started all this it was the EOBD orange light came on and a big lack of power also error code efi. once down at Bridge it did not take them long to find the fault which was a main bearing failure this caused the EOBD to come on due to movement of the pick up coil i presume. So the bike is all fixed runs smooth again now and no orange light which is a shame as xmas will be here soon. no only joking i dont like orange anymore !!! There is a lot MORE INFORMATION on this saga which i will let you all know about once i have heard back from Ducati. As the ball is in there court now !! SO WATCH THIS SPACE !!!! Regards Phill:sing: |
Good luck with this - glad you've got her back too. Tim:frog: |
super! all ready for a good thrashing now. well after its been run in of course. ;) |
Yes great news lads thanks, just got to run her in now 500 miles, as they fitted new crank shaft bearings at the same time as the main bearings so like a new engine and all under warranty as you would expect really. Also while she was at Bridge she had the 3000 miles / 1 year service done they fitted new belts, so once run in she will be all up and ready to go at last. I must admit my confidence in Ducati went when all this went ti*s up but now i have her back well !!!!!!!!!!! i might just have to sell the 2 Aprilias i bought to replace the duke !!!!!!!!!!! one for the track and one for the road !!!!! Watch this thread. Regards Phill:burn::bouncy [Edited on 25-11-2004 by PHILLIP] |
Glad to hear uv got your bike back phill, i got my 749r back from bridge last friday which was 7 weeks in total for my oil leak, but fair play to dean i beleive him when he said it was out of his control and he had to wait for an oil seal to come from the factory. Im just glad that it didnt happen say in june cos that would have really p***** me off, i am still waiting to hear from ducati to see wot thay are going to do for me for the time it was laid up ill keep you all informed. |
Hi Boyo, yes mate they said that your bike was done, i bet your glad just waiting for some sun now , i cant fault the dealer, just Ducati at the moment, they will just ask you to submit an expenses form for any compensation i.e. bus fairs etc and they want receipts so hang on to them mate, as if we do !!!!!!! Bad show though it took longer to get an oil seal for your bike than it did to fault find, strip and rebuild the bottom end of my engine and get all the parts in from the same place. Watch this SPACE !!!! Regards Phill ;) |
