DVD recorders

I'm in the market for a DVD recorder, but I don't know that much about them all. Can anyone point me out a few essentials that I should be looking for please? Not intending on spending any more than about £200 ish.

Cheers guys and gals.

Ade.

If your'e talking about non PC ones there are now DVD recorders that incorporate a Video recorder as well, ideal for transfering old video recordings to DVD. I'll be checking them out in the January sales. 6 months ago there were only a few about at just under £300, hopefully after Xmas I'll get one for around £200

Being totaly bored wondering around Sainsbury's at the weekend, I noticed they do cheap & nasty looking DVD recorders for £150. The manufaturer was 'Maco' or something like that.
Just curious if anyone would admit to owning one & if any good.

currently learning how to use a Panasonic DVD-RAM home recorder - HELP !!!

I bought the Mico ones - in fact, they were doing them for £85 (for the refurb ones) so I got 2 of them!

The specs are decent (plays anything you throw at it) and easy to use.

Unfortunately, they keep breaking on me and I have to return them. This Saturday will be my third trip back to return one, and I'll be leaving there with cash rather than a replacement.

It's really my fault as I went for the low rent version (refurb) of what is a low rent machine. If you are going to buy the Mico, don't be tempted by the refurbs...

The Gadget Chicken strikes again. Twice in one day - you lucky people!

DVD Recorder

I was in the market for a home cinema system in April this year and looked at what DVD recorders were available. You do get what you pay for and after much research I bought a Philips LX9000R DVD Recorder Home Entertainment System. What a piece of kit this is. Surround sound and two massive tube subwoofers. The sound is awesome. As for recording, it is excellent. Even when on 6hrs recording time the quality tops VHS any day. I record the full MotoGP, WSB and BSB onto one DVD+RW disc when I'm not about to view them. Best thing was the price - £500. I didn't get mine from comet but they have them at that price now. See the link

I've been hanging back a bit waiting for this technology to 'mature' - it seems that it is and even my wife is wishing that she let me get a surround sound DVD last time ....

I think she'll just let me go next time

I just bought a Panasin slimline one from a shop on "Pricerunner" cost £68 and gotone for my daughter on the web for £27 that does everything and is better than my Panosonic!!!

rcgbob44 05-Nov-2004 14:26

That should be PANASONIC not panasin!

JPM 05-Nov-2004 15:37

I guess if you're after one I'd be tempted to ensure it's multiregion, and has time slip also

ath748 05-Nov-2004 16:33

Yes, I'm after a TV DVD rescorder, not a PC one.

Already have the cinema surround, got a Sony DAV880 5.1 system with 42inch plasma to boot. Sweet. Just the VHS video to replace!

Thanks for all the info, will ensure it is multi-region and I think pricerunner is the way to go. Cheers all.

Off to catch my flight to Bologna now, then off to the Ducati Factory tomorrow morning. Oh yes!!

:D:D:D:D

I have the Panasonic DME-55. Works great, has all the required features, and has component out if your plasma supports it. It can be found with multiregion as well.
As I have Sky+ I did not need the HD version

ath748 24-Nov-2004 11:28

Cheers guys, no I haven't bought one yet. Tempted to leave it till the Jan sales. But I should go down to Richer Sounds to have a browse. Well spotted - from W. Yorks!!

You cn buy DVDs that play AVi files now.
Worth the effort if you download stuff.

Mad Dog Bianchi 26-Nov-2004 06:41

Just a word from the land of electronic gadgets. The big thing here now is HDD-DVD recorders. Biggest is now 400 GB with varying formats depending on the maker. Most of the stuff here is mainstream Japanese with a smattering of Korean and Philips, but the major Nip makers are really pumping out new stuff all the time. Most of it is now becoming digital Hi Def. Personally, I wpould stick with major brands as, even though they have problems, they have a much better track record and support system than off-brand stuff. Why come home and find the recording you so painfully set up for when you were away at work just ended up eating your disk.

But...but...but... That's illegal...! :frog:

You don't appear to be able to buy a DVD recorder yet though that plays AVI/DIVX files.

I bought the Phillips dvdr70 two weeks ago for a small sum of £150, from Amazon. And have been so impressed with it.
I have bounced down so many old bike videos which then end up in the bin. I seem to have shelf space again.
I would recommend one of these on any x-mas shopping list.

neil748r 26-Nov-2004 13:05

I've been holding off on buying a stand alone dvd recorder as I was under the impression (possibly mistakenly!) that there was still an issue with format, a bit like the old VHS vs Betamax thing. Admittedly I have been out the loop for a while though.

Any comments/insights?

clint 26-Nov-2004 13:13

Iam not completly up on the pros & cons, but i have given friends some of my recorded dvds and they have had no problem playing them back.

Clint.
