6 inch rear rim??? Hi peeps, Quick question for the ones with knowledge!:P I am thinking of going for a 6 inch rear rim. I currently have a 5.50 rear rim. Im thinking, will it go right on? I have heard that there might be clearance issues? I cant see why but......................... :smug: I know, pose over function and all that but Im just thinking about it at present.;) Ta, DC.:burn: |
Not really sure why you would want to do this. Most of us run a narrower section even on the track. |
:D I know, im just being a width perv!!:cool: Just wondering, thats all.;) |
Perv........:sing: |
shouldnt be a problem going on at all. fit a 190/55 and it should give you a bigger contact patch and retain as quick a turn in speed of a 180/55 |
i run marvics and they are a wider rim and i run a 190 rear and clears easily |
there's race wheels in 5.5, 5.75 & 6.0 widths. The 6.0" width fits the 190/50 section tyre better and should have no probs fitting in. I'm guessing that a 5.5" wheel weighs less than a 6.0" wheel and subsequently, probably, a 180 section tyre weighs less than a 190 section tyre. So there must be a trade off somewhere between weight and contact patch but I don't have the money to find out :) The race 916 used 19/67 race tyre which equates to 190/60 section tyre but not sure what rim width it was on. Seem to remember Shazaam talking all about this before. |

Having used both size rims I would say go for the 6" rim with a 190/55 on - the weight difference between the 5.5" ally rim and the 6" mag would overshadow the extra weight of a 190/55 giving you both quick turnin and larger contact patch. And it looks better;) |

So, The question is can you get tryes in the 190/55 easily? I ask this because I have only seen 190/50. I run Diablos at the moment but will probably go to corsas or rennsports etc. DC.:burn: |
I’ve got to disagree with this, put a 6” rim on the back and you will loose all your slow seed turn in. Fine if you’re just on the track but for road work especially through town you’ll run wide on all those small islands etc. My SP1 was a pig through town, 6” rim. I wasn’t happy with the 916 until I put a 180 on it. |

not with a 190/55 you wont. it has a higher profile than a 180/55. |
A couple of guys on here had the same query before they bought some of those carbon/mag wheels off me. DUK said theyd go on fine and the difference to an avergae rider would be negligible. To be honest at my level I didnt really notice that much difference on the track (ive ridden with both) Cheers Nat |
My bike has a 6 inch mag marchi fitted, and is currently running a nearly new 180 Bt12ss. It looks very flat in profile, and 'rides' like a squared off tyre when going over banding/lines in the road etc...ie bloody awful. So I'm also thinking of changing. Ran standard 180 Diablo before on my 748 with a 5.5 inch rim. Sweet as. I've been looking around and it seems that pirelli do the super corsas in a 190/55 which the the best profile I think for a 6 inch rim...so the question is...what are SC's like for the road, a possibility or a big no no. I don't do much/any riding in the wet. What king of milage are you likely to get from them (i understand they do different compounds?) |

the 180 would run crap its not the right tyre for the rim. pirelli do a 'street' version of the super corsa which i have used in the past. fine on dry roads more grip than you can use. clearly not too good in the wet but that doesnt sound like an issue. they also do the 'race' versions sc1 sc2 sc3 slightly different compound i beleive and designed to work at their optimum at higher temperatures that you get on track. i have these on as i tend to do a bit more track work now. |
So you use Sc's for the road then Dickie...which compounds? Whats the wear rate like...acceptable or just stupid?! |
i've used the street version on the road in the past with no problems what so ever but bear in mind i do generally summer riding so warm temperatures and fairly spirited riding. the race compounds sc1 sc2 sc3 etc will be harder to get up to temp on roads though so i take it a bit easier on them until i have confidence in them. i only use the race compounds as trackdays is where my priorties lie really otherwise i would stick with the street version. wear wise, for me i get rid of them when i lose confidence on them on track but im sure you could get 3k+ road miles on them. |
and sorry...... i've got an sc1 front with an sc2 rear . |
so if you get a 6 inch rear is the tyre size to go for 190/55 17 ? |
yup |
good glad we cleared that one up then :D;) |
Why..is there soemthing you want to share with us Keith..? :D;) Nat |
no I don't like to talk about my 6inch rim :smug:;) |
:( well i decide to stay with my 5.75 rear rim for now. And I will be sticking on some super corsers for the spring/summer. I have decided to give the old rims a new lease of life with a gloss black powder coat!!!:devil: Roll on the spring and the summer dudes!! DC.:burn: |

So what are you going to gain over the 5.5" rim with the 180 on? |
maybe nothing but you don't want to be disadvantaged if you already have a 6  |

I think the 6 in with a 190 will give a bigger contact patch than a 5.5 in with a 180 - but with the same profile? This is my understanding but I'm only regurgitating what I believe I heard. |
Must admit I have'nt tried or even seen a 190/55 on the road, it would be intresting to see how it compaired. |
Ziggi How do you get your avtar to switch between differnt piccy`s? |

correctamundo:D |
I run the super corsas 190 55 rear on a 6 inch rim and cant complain well only on the price of the tyre, I only ride on the road, got caught out in the summer in some rain and dont know how I made it home in one peice cos they are pants in the wet. |
