Wing Mirrors - a Question My wing mirrors are really loosed and don't stay in place as I'm riding along.. is there a way to fix this or do I need to buy new ones? Many thanks! |
on what bike??? |
sorry just checked your profile supersport 400 i guess? |
Yes sorry, should have said. The SS 400. |
Undo the mirrors from the cowling and get in behind the mirror stanchion. There should be a philipps head screw in there and if you tighten it the mirrors should not move very easily. This is for earlier model SS up to the late 90's I imagine. You really need to put some torque into the screw to tighten it down. |
Or do as Mad Dog says to get to the screw then undo and split the mirror from it's mount. Then get some coarse wet and dry/sandpaper and rough up both surfaces of the ball joint. Screw it back together and job done. Darren |
Thanks Fiscus. That is another point to add. Screw does tend to come loose after awhile, so this is a nice drill to get used to. |
Just wanted to thank you all for helping me with this. I successfully managed to tighten up Daisy's wing mirrors this morning and we had a lovely ride!... still can see bugger all in them - oh well! |
just experienced exactly the same with my mirrors on 600ss done the jobbie with wet and dry mod and hey problem solved-- this is a great website/forum!!!!!!!!:bouncy: |
I've found that even roughening up the surfaces, puting the mirrors in the freezer and then really tightening them hard still doesn't last. They are fine until they get moved and then they gradually loosen off again. :( The biggest improvement I made was to run an M5 tap down the threaded hole and fit a hex head M5 screw in place of the crosshead self-tapper that they come with.:eureka: Now I can get some decent torque on it the mirrors stay in place far better - makes them kinda hard to adjust though, but at least they stay there.:D |
Hmmmm.....mirrors are improved slightly by fitting mirror extensions (easy route or fitting different items), this guy used to make them but I cant find them on his website anymore: http://www.brancatoengineering.freeserve.co.uk/ |
He still does 'em. |
Wing Mirrors - a Question oo.. those extensions look rather handy. Think I may invest in a pair of those! Thanks! |
