Medical peeps - stabbing pain?

Bit of an odd one this, for the last few days, and I guess it happened a few months ago also, I keep getting a sharp, stabbing pain in my left thumb (of all places) between the knuckle and the end of my thumbnail, where the nail grows from I guess.

It's not bruised and I haven't injured it in any way, but I just receive some really sharp pains throughout the course of the day, and night - it woke me up the other night.

It's more annoying, and painful than worrying, but I just haven't got any idea what it could be, and what could be causing this.

Anyone got any ideas?

Lily 07-Dec-2004 12:13

I reckon it's too much use of the ps2 controller!!

JPM 07-Dec-2004 12:17

I would say that too, but I haven't been on the PS2 in a week or two now, so unsure where this pain is coming from

keefer 07-Dec-2004 12:18

repetitive strain injury :frog:

antonye 07-Dec-2004 13:03

Ingrowing nail? They can be very painful when they start cutting into a nerve.

Give the NHS helpline a call - they're pretty good as it's manned by Doctors and it's easier than booking to see your local GP.

(yes ... that's the full number!)

Doesn't look ingrowing though, not discolouration etc, and generally doesn't hurt if I apply pressure to it, it just comes and goes, but for the last few days has been agony.

I'd guess it could be mild arthritis or something, but there's no joint where the pain is

Sounds like an infected Paronychia to me.
Amputation OR an immediate cessation of all dishwashing activities is called for.
Or could try homeopathy.

Looking at that link, it fixes anything...

Old Yella 07-Dec-2004 14:08

Not worth guessing, get to the quacks and get it sorted while the bad weathers here, then you will be OK for next years track days! ;)

yeti 07-Dec-2004 14:59

It's a nerve thing. Know somebody with something VERY similar in their feet. They tried some goop from the states which seemed to work for a while, but they have now been referred to the consultant quack. Will let you know if I hear anymore, but it does sound very very similar

HellsBells 07-Dec-2004 17:38

Could this be a whitlow ??? An infection that generally lies around the egdes of nails.:puzzled:

JPM 07-Dec-2004 17:49

HB.... like I have said there is no infection, cuts, bruises, looks identical to my other thumb (you know what I mean) I just get pain from where the nail appears to grow from. If I press the area I feel no real discomfort, it just comes and goes

Lily 07-Dec-2004 17:55

just go to the doctor!!!!

keefer 07-Dec-2004 17:57

you need some acupuncture :ninja:

Ray 07-Dec-2004 18:11

Well I have just had a long conversation with Scottyb, albeit in a foreign language.... you southern lot wouldn't have had a clue :D

From the sounds of it I am not going to kick the bucket by any means, or non of my extremeties are going to drop off, could be something, could be nothing.

Looks like myself and Lily are off up to the North North!!! at some point next year, cheers ScottyB :D

Rattler 07-Dec-2004 18:37

Just have it off - then you'll have no worries!!

Monty 07-Dec-2004 18:51

"Just have it off"-errrrrr-you might want to re-phrase that Tim...........

John

ScottyB 07-Dec-2004 20:25

No Probs JP,

Now remember i prescribed not lifting a finger for at least 4 weeks, certainly no washing of Xmas dishes or any female chores like that....:D (Should cover you till after Xmas after that you are on your own)

Loads of watching Men & Motors and bucket loads of alcohol should clear it up a treat.

If you need a sick line to keep Lily off your back let me know.

Hopefully see you both in 2005.

Regards

ScottyB

Lily 07-Dec-2004 21:48

hmmmm... seems like Scotty has prescribed no change in lifestyle... seems odd :puzzled:
