Re: Side panel fitting

The left hand side panel on my 748s is now really tight after coming back from its service, by tight i mean the holes for the 4 top dzus fasteners seem to have got further apart and the panel is really taught now a lot more so that before.

The frame 2 are fixed so I guess the front 2 may have moved? now it really takes a lot of force to get them in. The right side is easy to get on to any ideas?

Thanks in advance.:D

NBs996 13-Dec-2004 00:51

so you mean the 'oles what line up on the nose cone?
all that comes to mind is the nose aint fitted properly... try taking it right off and re-fit.

skidlids 13-Dec-2004 00:53

Not sure but are all the Dzus fateners the same length, the top fairing is slightly thicker than the frame brackets so theymay use a 1mm longer Dzus.

moto748 13-Dec-2004 00:59

The Dzus fasteners are all the same. I always find the LH fairing a bit more difficult to replace than the RHS, but I just put that down to the RH fairing being removed more often. You can always tweak the positions of the Dzus receptacles a bit.

JPM 13-Dec-2004 17:22

You can adjust the backings, adjust by either bending them in or out (probably need a good strong pair of pliers) so that the dzus doesn't need as much force to lock.

Thanks for all the tips, will try on the weekend when its light enough to see:D

Don't like the thought of the panel being under tension:o

yeti 13-Dec-2004 18:39

Think NBs hit the nail on the proverbial. Try loosening off - but not removing all the screws that hold the nose cone on, fit the side panel then re-tighten the nose cone. Worked for me in the past.

Hi lee

Had this myself, sadly.

There is a small clip that is designed to lock the two panels together, in my case the dealer neglected to make sure this clip was in the right place and instead proceed to reassemble. This caused the panel to bow slightly and exagerate the distance between the fastners which could be what you are describing...

Good luck with it, love the look v nice indeed

beat me to it...I often forget the lug that sits behind the fairing panel which, if not placed correctly, makes it soooo tight to get on

More replies shows how excellent this club is at helping out each other:D

I'm pretty sure the tab was located behind the nose cone.

Would they of taken off the nose cone for the 6000 miles service?

When I took the panels off the front head was still all dirty and can't really see how they could check the valves and stuff without cleaning it first? have some pics will post them up soon

Thye don't have to take the head off off to check the valves etc, simply removing the two inspection covers on the front and rear of the head will allow them access. There are plenty of mechanics out there who can get these off without having to clean them!!!!!

I find a little dab of snopake (correction fluid) on the relevent bolts and screws keep the mechs honest!

That said, since I do most of it myself now, I'm only kidding myself! :sing:

Heres another looks well dirty and taking it off would unsettle some but looks untouched, even the y-piece looked as if it had never came off!!

These are the inspection plate ones I believe - "ex" meaning the exhaust side and the other being the inlet side.

The gaskets in the pics look new, but as you say the bolts don't appear to have been touched, but maybe it's only the way I do things that ends up with them all being rounded out :D

I'm sure Nelly will be along in a minute with a professional opinion.

yeti 14-Dec-2004 12:36

Gorra say I'm of the same opinin as you Lee, these don't look like they have been touched. Why don't you U2U nelly and ask his opinion
