888 SPS for sale. Why is it, that when you want a certain bike , you can never find one. And then as soon as you do find one, sort out a deal on it, another one comes out of the woodwork :puzzled::puzzled: There is another what appears to be an 888SPS for sale. It's in italy, no surpise there. Price, are you sitting down, £20,000 . The preliminary deal I have done with a guy for his SPS is bad enough, but it was'nt this high :o:o:o:o I know that a bike is worth whatever a buyer is willing to pay, but is their a real world price for these models, or is it allways going to be an open cheque book situation. any thought guys. cheers robin |
I was offered one in italy about 6 years ago for around £12000, so maybe you have a good deal. I reckon that barring a certificated race bike (or an Appollo :o:o) this must be one of the rarest Dukes around. I have only ever seen that one genuine one so I guess most people would mistake it for an ordinary (;);)) SP. Can't imagine you would ever lose money on it though ypu lucky so-and-so :D |
I supose in real terms even £20k is not excessive for such a ltd run bike. If you calculated how much a person may spend on biking, eg have 2 or 3 bikes, (916SPS &996R or 996SPS & S4R , 996 & 999s etc) you get my drift, on the go, plus running costs, you are probably very close to the same money as the SPS, but without the high residule value that the SPS retains. swings and round abouts I think, but I know which route I would take. cheers robin |
I have been offered £12000 twice for my SP5,so an SPS has got to be worth £15-£20K,depending on the mileage etc, just in that they only made 100 as opposed to 500 SP4's and SP5's. |
My 996 sps cost £15000 5 years ago, now worth £6500????. If my Italian had been better it would have been a different SPS in the garage. I know most of us don't buy bikes as an investment, but that would be like having your cake and eating it. As I said, most people will not know exactly what it is, but who cares. If you see a guy tapping your tank with his knuckle (very very gently:D:D:D) its probably me. As an aside I was once offered Foggies Donington 888 for a very good price plus help to put it on the road, and missed that. Story of my life :(:(:( |
I think if I had not decided to follow the SPS route, I would have gone for an SP5 jasp, just a shame they cut corners on it and left the ohlins off the front, and did'nt stick a carbon tank etc on it aswell.;););) The other real sleeper is the SP2, a real flyer, from memory I think they have slightly more grunt than the SP3(a more refined bike) , but they are just not coming up for sale anymore, and the ones that do, are not that good. I would like one of all of em, but in my dreams. ;);) cheers robin |
I am curious what sort of effect mileage has on these bikes. Would a bike that have done 2500 miles every year be worth as much ? |
Robin, Are you going to look at both of them? Who put you in touch with these bikes? I can't decide if it's something I should even contemplate. Rgds, Rob |
I don't know much about the SPS but I've heard of the SP1-5s. How come it was so limited? Was it the final version before the 916? |
When did anyone last see an 851 Tricolore for sale ? |
If its a good un (which it almost certainly will be!) then £20k is a fair deal IMO....its just such a rare bike. Is the bike in italy the one with under 1000km on the clock and billet calipers etc..? I think I mentioned before but I know someone who bought one about 6 years ago and its soared in value. The only thing I would say, is that I think its one of those bikes which should only be used sparingly as a second toy to keep the mileage down and its condition mint....in the same way a Ferrari enthusiast wouldnt buy a GTO and use it every weekend I guess ! Oh..and like Rob..let me know about the second one as I know someone whos been looking for ages too ! By the way..I picked up a bike book from on outlet village cheapie bookshop for a fiver with a nice write up on the SPS (and other exotics like NR750/NC30 etc)...its called superbikes by Roland Brown..ISBN 1854224026... Cheers Nat |
Hi guys The book Nat mentions can be bought at your local Asda. (Saw it only last week). Beancounter: (RE 851) This bike has been for sale a while now. It looks a good un too! http://www.vintagebike.co.uk/Bikes%2...cati%20851.htm Robin: I bought the mag with the (Italy) SPS for sale last week, since I was interested in the MV over the page. I thought this particular bike was the one you were actually looking at. Seems expensive to me @ £20,000 - but what do I know..?? If you're intending to keep it long-term, I guess it'll hold its price (if the mileage is kept down). It's not going to appreciate much beyond that amount though!! If you're looking for a bike to use regularly (and maybe even gain a little on resale), you'd be better off with the SP5 advertised on the same page. £7500 can't be bad. There's little difference in spec. between these machines - and think how much you'd save on initial outlay! (Of course, this is letting the head rule the heart - and that's not always easy to do. At the end of the day, you'll just have to go with your gut feeling). Steve |
Thank you weeveetwin. You got me going for a minute, until I saw the price ! no wonder it's been for sale a while........... The last Tricolore I saw for sale was in the back pages of Italian Bike magazine and I think it was under 4k - another one missed (sigh). |
Rob, U've got a U2U mate. cheers robin |
Robin I think £20k would really be top money even for an SPS, and it would have to be absolutely immaculate, low mileage etc. And to be any sort of investment, it'd have to stay that way. As far as I'm concerned, that would put me off riding it much, certainly in the way in which it was intended to be ridden (i.e. hard!). Even if it fell off its stand (let alone get thrown down the road!) you'd probably decimate its value. If you spent the same money on a 999R (not that I'm recommending you do!), at least you could easily put it back to new. As far as investment value goes, it's undoubtedly a valuable bike, but buyers are likely to be thin on the ground. I didn't get any takers for my (admitedly more humble) SP3; have you sold your 851 yet? Jasper had a good offer on his SP5, and I think Nat has had good offers on his 888, but they weren't selling! Concerning SP2 vs SP3, I thought they were mechanically identical, the SP3 just having upswept pipes, black wheels and a carbon front fender? Engine spec was the same (for which read variable...). But then I'm biased. Incidentally, my SP3 is probably no longer for sale, more on that in the New Year. Steve - which mag has all the adverts for exotic bikes? Andrew |
Just found an SP5 for £7500. now where's my company cheque book.:D |
Just got off the phone with the owner off the 2nd SPS in italy, a really nice guy and his english is very good. From the first pic I've seen it looks really nice, and it is a geniune SPS, with low miles, and some nice goodies to go with it (marelli racing clock assembly etc). It's never been raced or tracked , unlike most off the other 888SPS's . He's emailing me some more pics and info, so this looks like a potential purchase if my first choice turns out to be less than A1. Will need to do some serious haggling with the price though. oh my god, hope the wife does'nt find out, £££££, she'll go ballastic........:o:o:o, I think some cash for retail therapy will make her see what a good investment it will be.;);) cheers robin |
Red SPS,they may have dropped the Ohlins, but the Showas are alot higher spec than the Showas on the standard 888's,and don't blow oil seals every 200m like my SP4 ones did!!!I would go for the SPS if you want a museum piece or an SP5 if you want to ride!!(and live without the overheating engine, blown fork seals and impossible to repair carbon tank!!:D).Joking aside,i think you will not be dissappointed with either.£7500 is a good price for a good SP5-BUY THEM BOTH!!!-PROBLEM SOLVED!! [Edited on 24-12-2004 by Jasper] |

SPS Anyone bought this bike? |
still for sale at present. I can't do much until I've seen it, which is a must , unless someone gets in sooner. cheers Robin |
Noticed the SPS is still for sale..its in 'classic bike' mag now !!...(ahem..erm...my dad told me it was there obviously...) Nat |
It seem a lot has happened in my abscence in this forum . anyway, it will be here in few weeks, had few issues to deal with, so things have been delayed a bit. but got it booked to go into baines for a checkover and a few bits to be sorted. pics will be coming shortly. hope you guys are all OK . cheers robin |
Well done mate, that's a result>what's the story on it? |
thanks mate. one owner bike from new, based in italy. totally standard bike, not been messed obout with at all. Main problem is that it has been stood up on front/rear stands & not be used since 1998. On the plus side, it was covered up in a centrally heating garage, so condensation/corosion is not really an issue. But it needs a damm good service/belts the lot, plus all the cooling system/hoses etc checking. But baines are ace at sorting these bikes, so I'll leave it in there capable hands. Realistically, by the time I get it registered over here etc, and it gets back from baines it is going to be mid april before I get it out on the road. So nicer wether should be here by then, I hope... I keep you posted mate. would be nice to put it up against the other bikes 851/888/9xx bikes as in another posting. catch you later jasp. robin |
Well done Robin:) |
Hi Red, is this the same SPS that was for sale in Classic Bike or have you managed to buy the other one you mentioned? Gary. |
I did'nt get time to look at the second bike , as advertsied in classic bike, athought it did look nice from the pics the owner sent me. I stayed with the first bike, moreso due to the fact that it was a standard SPS, no mods at all, and also 4k cheeper, which was a serious factor. cheers robin |
Do you know from your research how many there are left in the UK and/ or abroad Robin? I've seen the photo of the chap and his SPS in Mick Walkers book, but apart from his example, the two you looked into buying and mine are the only ones I know of. Regards, Gary |
Hi Gary Including your own, and Robin's (to be) I know of six in the UK. The other four are in Cheshire, Hampshire, Lancashire and Inverness. There may well be others I don't know about though. Steve |
Thanks, Steve. It was curiosity on my part. I have a brief article that was in Bike magazine in November 1992 that stated 16 were imported, all pre-sold, but I have heard that some went straight onto the track because of their high spec and the fact that racers couldn't get their hands on the Corsa racebikes. Gary. |
Jasper writes: "Red SPS,they may have dropped the Ohlins, but the Showas are alot higher spec than the Showas on the standard 888's,and don't blow oil seals every 200m like my SP4 ones did!!!" First...........the SP5 Showas are not any different than any other Showa adjustable fork used on Ducks. I have both and have taken them both apart. They are 100% identicle inside. Second............the Ohlins on the SP's are racing forks and are designed to weep a bit for full slider lubrication......meaning less stiction that all Showas have. Third.............if you are blowing seals on your SP then your doing something wrong. Many SP's here in the states that have 30+ miles on them without seal problems. Mike |
Sorry Mike, can't agree with you on this! There was such an issue with SP4 fork seals leaking that it ended in a court.I think you will find that most people that have or have had SP4's with Ohlins have had a problem. As for the Forks on the SP5,they are completely different to "Standard" 888/SP0 forks.the SP5 was the only 888 that came with the Showa GD 061 forks,as opposed to the GD 011's fitted to the rest of the range. This is only my opion of course, and am prepared to be proved wrong!:) |
