what are real differences beteen 998 & 998S

Hi people, I'm just wondering what the actual differences are between these two ?

I know the S had different front brakes, has different cans, and supposedly makes more power. Why does it make more power though ?
Is it only the cans & chip, or are the cams/heads/compression/timing/whatever different too ?

What I'm getting at is, if you took a stock 998 and slapped a set of dp cans & chip on, along with the S split-pad front calipers, what would still be different ?

Cheers,
John.

I think the S engine has the deep sump for one (please correct me if I am wrong), possible different bore/stroke, cams, valves, compression.

Plus other stuff that springs to mind the S should come with an Ohlins rear shock and steering damper, the Bayliss/Bostrom variants of the S also come with Ohlins forks, and stand, cover, plaque etc, not performance enhancing, but additional to the standard S models

I think it has some titanium conrods as well ?
the motor is the same as spec as the sps I think.
so no it wont be the same, but wont be that far away

???? Not sure on that to be honest, I know things like shims and collets are different between the S and the R...

Where's Tim when you need him :D

Usually the S model has the same engine as the previous year's R model.

I believe this is the case with the 998S being the same engine as the 996R, with the 998cc testastretta engine and the 998R being the 999cc version, as explained here:

Couple of quotes:

"Sigma however specialises in getting the best from the street stuff, so a 996R or the later more mass produced 998s, (the 2002 998S engine has the same deep sump sand cast crankcases (made in super tough Galsi 7 alloy) as the homologation engines but with the mass production side of the motor just a little more finished) was going to be in our future."
http://www.sigmaperformance.com/testastretta.html

"The new Testastretta engine finds its way into the std models for the 2002 model year. The 998S that everyone except those in the USA gets has the same engine as the ‘01 996R. The ’02 998R has a bigger bore/shorter stroke 999 engine."

Antonye, thanks for the link.

I surfed off to here ==> http://www.ducati.com/my2002/ducatiM...modelName=998S
which does indeed state the 2002 998S has the 2001 996R engine with a deep sump. It doesn't actually say the 998 doesn't have a deep sump though and since I've not seen a picture of the two I don't know what the real difference is (10mm/20mm/50mm deeper ??).

Seems the forks & rear shock are the same as the standard 998 though, only the steering damper is different (S has ohlins one).

So potentially the sump could be different, but what else engine wise ?
The info states the bore & stroke are the same.

Cheers,
John.

John W

The 998s does indeed have the 2001 996R engine which is a deep sump testasreta lump, However I believe it does not have the `R`s` Ti rods.

It has different cams to the plain 998 and a larger bore exhaust system.
Not sure about a different engine management system but as I have replaced mt exhaust with a Termi system, it comes with a new management system. By changing the exhaust and "chip" to a Termi system a 998s puts out about 130-134 at the rear wheel, I have also fitted the JHP undertank filter system which definitly makes the engine "crisper".

All in all the s model is a better bet to go for if your in the market for one. For your own interst there were only 27 998s monoposto`s imported to the Uk of which only 7 were in Yellow, for you Essex chaps that means that 20 were red!:o:o:D

oops forgot to add that the S has a carbon belly pan and an Ohlins rear shock as well as an Ohlins steering damper.

As others have said the motor is a Deep sump on the S, very similar spec to the 2001 996r. The cooking 998 has different cams if my memory serves me correctly you used to be able to get a Ducati performance kit for a cooking 998 to upgrade to S cams??? But nothing could be done about the sump??

DUK might have only brought 27 bikes in but IMHO there are quite a few parallels about.

Very popular bike as it was a 996r with a bit less bling for a good few thousand pounds less.

Ray.

Cheers guys.

Reason for asking was to determine hoe different my 'cooking' 998 is from a 998s.

Previous owner (Ben998) has put a large bore system (54mm I think) on complete with chip, and done the brakes too.
Therefore I was wondering what else needed doing.

Btw, the normal 998 also has the rear ohlins.

I would love a 998s (rode one when they first came out) but can't put that much dosh into one bike at present.

Thanks again,
John.

John,
I was lucky enough to buy a 998S Mono in Yellow..! thru the web site. After taking a 998 out for a test ride it had to be the 'S' Love the bike to bits. It took me almost 8 months before one came up for sale...If you get the chance, buy one...(in yellow of course !) :sing:

Henners 11-Jan-2005 22:00

I've owned both the 998Bip and the 998S FE - the S engine plus the Ohlins forks makes a world of difference, well worth the extra.

rcgbob44 14-Jan-2005 16:28

And then you went and sold it!.................................silly boy.

Henners 15-Jan-2005 08:54

... but only for the most beautiful bike in the world ;)

rcgbob44 15-Jan-2005 09:11

This is a classic Ducati thing, where do you stop?
Its a sure fact you can keep going and going, eg 998 or 998s? Have you looked at a 996r, or a 998r or a 999r, or a 2005 999s? or a desmosedici??

It just keep going, and the only restriction is budget!
