high-level can

There appear to be lots of cheap race cans out there for the 600SS (around £100)

Does anyone have a source for the connecting pipe to make them high-level?

cheers, Chi

ali 12-Jan-2005 14:44

Hi Chi,

Mines got what appears to be a home made job connecting a distinctly non-standard can to the two-into-one manifold. You're welcome to borrow it for a week to have another made up from it. I'll take photos when I get the bike on Saturday.

Cheers,

ali

might just take you up on that Ali - I'll see what kind of deal I can get on a can first as it might be a different length to yours.

5 minutes with a pipe bender and the right size piece of steel pipe?

Sounds like a job for American Chopper if you ask me!

I'm quite happy to subcontract the job if you're offering!

antonye 12-Jan-2005 15:12

I don't have a pipe bender, but I've got a big hammer if that's any help?

chicken 13-Jan-2005 12:02

I've got my own hammer thanks, but feel free to chip in if you think it will help!

I have actually just ordered a cheapo ART can that is a straight swap for the existing one. Any recommendations for a place that really can make up a connecting pipe?

antonye 13-Jan-2005 12:05

I would think that any "custom" motorcycle place should be able to do that for you - find one local and phone them for a chat.

If not, you may get lucky with some bits of universal exhaust in the right diameter. I know you can get these for cars for linking up custom/competition exhaust systems so you may well be able to get the correct angles and bodge it all together. Try somewhere like http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/ ?

I've just had a chat to the guys at Zorstec as they seem to know their stuff:
http://www.zorstec.net/main.htm

They can make us up high level link pipes which would fit between the original headers and cans (you'd just need to sort the can mounts) for around 100 quid for a twin system, or less if you've got a two-into-one.

This is a specially negotiated (by me!) club discount price and we'd need to get at least ten orders for this.

'm assuming that a monster and SS would not be that much different?

Anyone interested? How does it compare for cost?

FiscusFish 13-Jan-2005 12:55

Chi, I'd imagine Renegade down at Brands would be able to help.

I'm interested but I don't want to pay very much for a piece of pipe with 2 bends in it? Am I being a) cheap b) ignorant c) practical?

antonye 13-Jan-2005 13:12

I'm thinking that we need to get a bike over to them to let them see exactly what is required.

I agree that a couple of short pipes with some bends in them shouldn't be too expensive, but it's very difficult to give a quote over the phone if you don't know the bike very well.

Is anyone close there, or fancy a ride up at some point?

chicken 13-Jan-2005 13:13

okay - now that I've actually READ the website, I'm happy to stump up for a mandrel-bent pipe.

Please add me to the list Antony - I'm assuming a link pipe for a single can will be about £50?

antonye 13-Jan-2005 13:14

They guy also mentioned that he can do cans at a reduced price for club members too - might be worth bearing in mind!

chicken 13-Jan-2005 13:17

looks like I've missed another deal then.....:(

antonye 13-Jan-2005 13:35

I don't see why the pipes can't be made up to fit standard cans - which if you've bought an aftermarket can it should also fit.

Looking at the DP brochure pics, the only difference between high and low-level exhausts is a very short piece of connecting pipe. This is actually added (as in welded) to the high level pipes rather than being an additional (separate) piece of pipework.

If someone can sort out these short pieces of additional piping at a relatively cheap cost, I reckon we'll be onto a winner.

antonye 13-Jan-2005 13:44

This is what I was thinking about - the difference in the pipes is just the short section marked...

Note that the cans are not aligned the same, hence they won't look exactly right in the pic... but you get the idea!

TP 13-Jan-2005 13:47

I might be up for this Antony, but I a few things need to fall into place before I know what I'm doing.

I'll let you know.

antonye 13-Jan-2005 13:49

Cool - if/when I get a bike sorted I may take a trip up there to get a proper quote and maybe have a test set made up to see if it really does work.

Once we know how this goes, we can then make a decision on a group purchase.

Posted this last year, I now have a set of high level Cans coming for Cathy`s monster, will get them up to Wayne & ask him how much to do a set for desmo due racers.

High Level Exhaust Systems For Desmo Due racers

I know a company that has just started up in Nottingham that will make a high level system for your racing monster at a fraction of the price you would pay for a named system & will do repairs on cans etc. All he needs to start with is an existing high level system to get the dimensions from or a bike so that he can tailor a system for it. Company is J.A.C, 0115 9635556, 07812191122, guys name is Wayne Jackson, he used to design & make systems for a leading aftermarket manufacturer. Attatched image is a system he made for my R6 before I got my 748.
