Bike Progress ... Only one bolt has had to be drilled so far, but it looks like those b'stard exhaust downpipe nuts have rusted completely stuck. Any tips? |
Split the side of them off with a small, sharp chisel. or get a nut splitter. You'll probably get away with running a die up them to clean them and you're sorted. If you start drilling and swinging on the stud, you could lose the thread in the head and then you'll need a Helicoil. |
Also, I'm going to overhaul the carbs and I see that there are a lot of gaskets and o-rings that need replacing. Is there a kit available from Ducati which contains everything I need to do this? |

Thanks mate - will give that a try. As I'm going for the 680 kit, I'm only worried about getting the fockers off at the moment! |
you do like a tinker dont you?, i feel a bit left out really not having anything to do. i guess i could bolt on a bit of carbon when it arrives through the post:D |
You sure you can handle something that complicated Dickie? Still, at least it's not far to bring it round mine when you can't figure out which end of the screwdriver to use... |

excellent and it looks just like my bike too! just a foot note though....................... i dont see valentino with a spanner in his hand very often:lol: |
Lol! I'll remind you of that at the end of the season. Although, if you read "Valentino Rossi - Moto Genius" you'll realise that he did used to fix and tune his own bikes very early on... |

yeah, well i used to take my scooter enigine apart when i was 16 too. but like rossi i've now moved up in the world and am a top flight racer now:D well.......ok.......a racer. sorry, i'll get my coat! |
The nuts all came off without too many problems - sometimes it's great that Ducati make their fasteners out of cheese! :D One had to be completely chiselled off in 3 bits, but came off the stud really clean. Two loosened with a few whacks of the chisel then came off with the spanner and the other came off no problems. The exhausts are now out completely, so it's now just wheels and an engine in the frame! Now to get some stands to pull the rest apart... Pics to follow. |
Headstock stand - looks good and I missed an Ebay bargain when it was sold for £49.99 :( pins are very reasonable - stand looks to be good quality but a bit expensive: http://www.toolsnstuff.co.uk/advance...?keywords=fps3 Good Luck - Frank |

Got the shock off tonight, and it's in very, very good condition given the age and condition of some of the rest of the bike! That will be sent away, along with the forks, to my new mate Clive Horton at Racing Lines who also happened to be my ACU academy instructor today! The swingarm is the next thing to come off, and I'll take the opportunity to check the bushes and stuff, along with fitting the lower chain guard. Then I'll drop the engine out. I also attempted to clean out the fuel tank - my god there was some crap in the tank! plenty of rust in the bottom and the first litre of petrol out of the drain was rusty as hell. I've taken the pump out too and the inner tank filter definitely needs replacing as it's got plenty of crap in it too. The outer cap ring is also a right state, but that will be polished up without too much problem, and I have a non-locking cap for it too which looks awesome. [Edited on 8-2-2005 by antonye] |
Oh yes, the fuel tap also snapped off as the alu was so badly corroded! Any ideas? Might replace it with something a bit more accessable like on the monsters... |
