Anyone else *not* got a garage?

ak47's "Dilemma" thread (999 v. 749) got me thinking about insurance...

Way back when, when I bought the 748, my understanding was that the 996/998 was Group 17, and the 748 Group 15. Furthermore, that the brick-type garage was pretty well mandatory for Group 17 bikes, and I wouldn't get cover without one. As I have no garage, and am unlikely to have one in the foreseeable future, I took it that Group 17 bikes were in general out of the question for me. I have a ground anchor cast in my back yard, under the bedroom window. In my view that's as secure, if not more so, that a separate garage. But insurance companies don't seem to see it that way.

Don't get me wrong: I'm very happy with my bike, and it's still way ‘more bike than I am rider’. So I certainly don't "need" anything bigger. But as the prices of 7448/996/998's seem to be falling fast these days, maybe a 996 or some such wouldn't be out of the question at some point in the future.

So does anyone run a litre bike without a garage?

For reference my basic premium for the 748 (pre- legal gubbins and breakdown cover) is about £220.

TIA

I had a 996 insured in London without a garage, but I paid through the nose for it. That was with Carole Nash. £1400

moto748 25-Jan-2005 20:40

Well if I lived in ThatLondon, I don't think I'd be riding a Ducati at all!

Festa748 25-Jan-2005 20:46

yer i have a 748 in a shed cat 1 alarm home made ground anchor and chain on it i just got my quote for next year, 4 yers ncd and 23 years old + 1 month ban (sp30) and its £560 fully comp

rockhopper 25-Jan-2005 20:47

I notice that the requirement for a "brick" garage appears to have vanished from the insurance co's web sites. When i renewed they only asked for a garage, they didnt specify what it was to be made of. My point is that one of those metal shed things might do.

cashburning748r 25-Jan-2005 20:50

Hi Moto

I ride a 748r 2001 and have no garage. Of course i would love a garage but I cant have one so tuff for me I guess.

Insured through Ducati Insurance, I live in Essex and it costs me £440 fully comp. I have 5 years no claims.

They class it as - Unlocked garage/drive

Hope this helps.

I live in London and don't have a garage - only a front yard with a ground anchor & run a 996S - insurance is a grand fully comp with insuremyducati.
Would love to be able to afford a house in the capital with a garage but I'm not rich enough.

bradders 25-Jan-2005 21:37

when I checked mine out (thought about converting the garage) most seemed to accept a covered place - ie shed was fine. Or, as Mav puts above, a purpose built bike store.

Mr C 25-Jan-2005 21:47

I have no Garage but it does live in the House. I have a Traders Policy I opted for bike cover unlimited cc. £760 TPFT. 31 years old, 0 years no claims due to a theft.
Allows me to drive any car/bike in my custody or control. But £5k max claim.

antonye 25-Jan-2005 22:02

I have two garages and my renewal was £118 this year.

Suckers!

NBs996 25-Jan-2005 22:07

yeah, but you've only got a shopping bike ant!

Sucker!!! :P

uncle porry 26-Jan-2005 00:33

i just moved house, only bout half a mile from where i used to live, bennetts charged me 53 quid to change address ! :o

madmav 26-Jan-2005 00:44

uncle p

get the ombudsman to sort that !!!!!
it's a scandle:mad::mad:

Melnie Mouse 26-Jan-2005 10:06

I haven't got a garage, but I have a shed, with concrete base and a ground anchor, and as I have a brick wall around garden (around shed ish) they said that was fine...

Harv748 26-Jan-2005 10:51

Ditto Melnie

No garage, but bike alarmed and locked, in a shed with padlock, behind a 7ft brick wall, only access via 7ft tall padlocked gate, which can only be accessed by moving the alarmed car that is parked right up close to that!

Insurance Co. seemd happy with that.

Michael J 26-Jan-2005 11:37

And me too Uncle P. Just moved to N Wales from Cambs and got charged £38 by Riders Choice for change of address to a lower risk area! I told them I would not be renewing my policy with them.

i can walk to my old house in about 2 mins, so how the hell can they say i am in a higher risk area, rang them today and they wont budge on the charge, (£33 for higher risk & £20 admin) told them i would be looking elswhere come renewal time....insurance companies same old story, when you ring them for a quote they are all yes sir , no sir, soon as you have a problem and they have your money, they talk to you like your a piece of ****...

kwikbitch 26-Jan-2005 23:12

I have no garage...My bike lives in my kitchen. AND it can be a struggle, especially when cream crackered to take it in "backward" along a 3ft wide corridor with a radiator down one side and a bannister down the other!:o
Never the less I do it!...Bennetts charge me £480 TPFT...with an Excess of £200....If It is stolen outside my house, the excess increases by £100.
If I want to come in and have a cuppa before giving him a bath I am told that I need to bring it in to save increasing the excess if it is stolen from outside my property!
It's a joke!

Dukerob 26-Jan-2005 23:23

of course it lives in the kitchen, that way you can spend most of your time with it :bouncy: ............ whats for tea duck :puzzled:

JasonBoswell 27-Jan-2005 12:44

I had to go rent a garage round the corner from my place in order to get insurance.

Now were looking to move house, my only requirement is that we find somehwre that has a garage... then I can shut myself away from the w + k's and listen to the cricket and polish the bike :D:D

misterpink 27-Jan-2005 15:02

i'm getting one of those garages on mav's reply - mine was garaged 5-10 mins walk away, when they started getting messed with i moved it to my front room - bike was taken so quickly i didn't have achance to get it in. insurance are going to give me a grilling next monday - they have made an appointment with me so i hope it is going to be OK without a dogfight?!
