lap timers/transponders

what are the options?

i know that some tracks have the beacon so you get lap time as you pass, but is it easier to just have a bar mounted lap timer?

Also if you are racing do you have to have a transponder or can you borrow one?

what are the best makes for lap timers etc?

dickieducati 28-Jan-2005 15:08

bar or dash mounted/incorporated in instruments are a waste fo time imho.

most circuits have their beacon on permanently.

for raciing you need a transponder and can either buy or hire.

i use a t200 lap timer. never had a problem with it and you can download and save your date.

its good because i can see how slow i am time and time again!:lol::lol:

Lily 28-Jan-2005 15:25

so how much are they and where from?

i seem to recall Rattle rposting up sometime ago about a bar mounted one that worked pretty well?

timetrial 28-Jan-2005 15:57

i've got a t200 - mutts nuts and easy to use

Lily 28-Jan-2005 16:00

so come on then... how much and where from... :D

don't tease me.. :)

dickieducati 28-Jan-2005 16:16

i would guess around 120-130 without the beacon. which to be fair you probably dont need. i bough it but havnt used it yet. everywhere i have been since getting it has always had their beacon on: brands, silverstone, rockingham intl. you could always borrow mine if you go on a track without their beacon on. i only got it to be 100 pct certain

anyone know the difference between a t100 and a t200 (and dont say about 100 :frog: )

Felix 28-Jan-2005 16:41

Lily, never used a bike mounted lap timer but I am sure they can be useful. Always had someone stand on pit wall for hand measured lap times.

For racing, you'll need a TranX260 transponder. It will vary from club to club but DP, Bemsee, and NewEra use them. With DP, you can hire one for a tenner if you only do the odd race. For a full season you need to buy one anout £200.

t100 can record 100 laps and t200.....you guessed it 200!

the t100 doesnt allow downloads either. it really good to have them downloaded as you can see what you were doing last time. or a year a go or whatever. it also gives you average lap tim, total laps, time on track etc.

Lily 28-Jan-2005 16:58

cheers folks

might keep an eye out on ebay....

and Felix, sound slike hiring is better option for the race option.

Rattler 28-Jan-2005 19:04

The bar mounted ones are fine!!

As you're not officially allowed to time laps on trackdays, there's no guarantee that they'll have the timers turned on.

A calender works well for me:lol:

MarioP 28-Jan-2005 19:43

I did some research myself a month ago and came across two other lap timers which seem to have pretty good reviews (also in USA).

1) MyChron Light TG
2) Ultra-lap XT Lap Timer

I personally like the MyChron for its slick design and the option of a blue back-light display. They both have download capabilities via USB.

Hope this helps,

Ciao

Rollcentre are doing the T200 for about £122 inc VAT & P&P at the mo' includes the beacon

Just bought one via their website.

Ray.

Mr R,

I'm surprised at you, that doesn't look like the reasurringly expensive option to me.

Why not have the staff counting to themselves trackside, the organisers will never notice. They can report the count on parchment served on a silver salver while mopping your heated brow back in the mobile country house??!!

Ray - this isn't for the track, I've attached timers to each one of the staff!!!

I've put them all on a productivity bonus, and this way i can see how long it takes them to make the cucumber sandwiches (without crusts), mow the croquet lawn, feed the polo ponies and serve up tea and tiffin!!!

If they don't complete these tasks in less than 4 minutes whilst ironing the papers, they're oyt!!! ;)

On their website they have T200 at £99 and beacon at £40. Plus the VAT :puzzled:

Was that a limited time offer?

PC

Mr_S 08-Mar-2005 23:58

I ordered a T200 15th feb and the bill was £123.38. (T200 + post + vat)
but no beacon included in the offer.

Did Ray get a beacon as well for that price???

Ray 09-Mar-2005 11:07

Nope no beacon. for the £99 plus deal.

the info. was a bit misleading and WJB took 'em to task about it.

Hopefully the circuit beacons will do the job

Ray.

adam 09-Mar-2005 20:09

when you guys are doing track days have the track beacons been on and which track does this involve? or is it best to buy the beacon with the T200?

Mr_S 09-Mar-2005 23:24

I asked this question of a fair few people before buying and it seems that most of the time the trackside beacons are left switched on and are on the pit wall (or very close). So I didn't bother buying one, but I do know where I can borrow one if needed.

The best tip I got though was to set the blanking corectly in case another rider had a beacon setup elsewhere on the circuit for split times etc.

dickieducati 10-Mar-2005 09:32

i have a beacon but have never had to use it on the 3 tracks i have used it on since i got it.....brands, rockingham intl, silverstone.
