disc carriers.

I have had a PFM superbike brake kit sitting in my garage for quite a while, decided to fit the kit to my 996R, trouble is the off set on the disc carriers are wrong. Where can i obtain new carriers and roughly what price? How do you measure the off set?

ericthered40 30-Jan-2005 18:36

you should check out a P F M site and see whitch Ones you have
009 for the 916 or 003 that the one for your bike they don't seam to have any spasers in the kits

adam 30-Jan-2005 18:56

no spacers eric, i think i just need to swap carriers. I know some of the guys on this site run a PFM set up, wonder what their thoughts are. I had this set up on my 748R, no problems, but the ohlins are different on the 996R

now someone may correct me if I am wrong. but I believe that the r series bikes have different carriers than the general spec bikes. i.e those with Ohlins front forks as standard.
if you look at the inside of the fork leg where the calliper mounts up you will see it has been machined away.
I had some 5mm shims made up by Yeti to put the calliper back to where it should be. and that's all you should need

sorry im confused.
but I have now reached 500 :bouncy:

bolds 30-Jan-2005 19:26

Only the 748 and 998R have the deeper dished discs and the the Ohlins with 5mm machining at the back of caliper mount.
The 996R uses Ohlins without machined backs and therefore uses discs of standard dish.

keefer 30-Jan-2005 19:29

so are we talking about the mounting holes then :puzzled:

ericthered40 30-Jan-2005 19:31

No offset spacings:roll:

bolds 30-Jan-2005 19:34

For a 996R if buying a brake kit the one to go for would be standard 996/748 fitment type

adam 30-Jan-2005 20:14

I originally bought this kit for my 748R. when I p/x it for my 996R I asked them to transfer the PFMs onto the 996R. They phoned me to say they wouldnt fit. off set not right. Both bikes had ohlins. How does that work then?

So then Bold, the 748R does have machined backs on the forks, thats why they fitted that bike. How else do i solve the problem?

You can either get some 748/998R Ohlins or get your forks machined at the back of caliper mounts by 5mm or the other option is to get some PFM discs of standard type dish

adam 30-Jan-2005 20:33

could the discs be spaced away from the wheel, or calipers away from the forks? which ever way round it is.

what about discs away from the wheel. Is this a safe modification?

bolds 30-Jan-2005 20:47

The problem you have is that your 748R discs have a deeper dish than 996R (5mm) therefore the discs will be to wide and your calipers will be 5mm to far inwards and not to far out- which is what Yeti's spacers would rectify.
as stated before there is no spacing options only replacing fork legs/bottoms or maching bottoms or buying correct discs to suit

ericthered40 30-Jan-2005 20:53

Why are P F M saying they are the same fittment code on their site ?

adam 30-Jan-2005 21:12

Dont know mate:puzzled:

bolds 30-Jan-2005 22:18

996R Ohlins fork leg inside of caliper mount

bolds 30-Jan-2005 22:19

And 748/998R Ohlins inside of caliper mount

adam 30-Jan-2005 22:54

just had a look at my forks and you are correct tony, just matched up the PFM disc and the standard one, the PFM has a deeper dish. like you said tony fork bottoms machined out, new bottoms or new disc/carriers. Bl**dy hell. How much are Fork bottoms?

bolds 30-Jan-2005 23:07

Don't think the bottoms are normally available seperately but Ducati Coventry (John Hackett) has done a lot of radial conversions so he may have some that have been replaced.
Its worth a try

keefer 31-Jan-2005 11:42

or just get your ones machined and have some spacers made up at the same time.
then you can run what you want

adam 31-Jan-2005 18:30

ahhh man cant go through the grief of taking the forks out, got to try and get different carriers.. boo hoo:(

adam 31-Jan-2005 18:50

any idea of price for having the caliper mounting points machined?

Felix 31-Jan-2005 19:28

Flog your discs on Ebay and the proper stuff. Don't bodge it!

keefer 01-Feb-2005 12:29

nothing bodged about having them properly machined.
not saying get out there with your dremal.
and any way as is already mentioned the 748 and 998 R have it done.
only thing is it wont then be original.
don't know how much to get it done, best look in the yellow pages and ask for a few quotes, depends which is cheaper new carriers or CNC milling ?

DaveB916 01-Feb-2005 15:09

Had a similar problem with a rather Gucci set of discs I managed to get my hands on that I wanted fitting to my Senna. Long story short the bike went to Pete @ http://www.panda-engineering.co.uk/ and he machined @ 3 mm off each side of the Marchesini, 2.8mm off back of carrier, re machined the carrier holes to correct ‘pattern’ and then @ 2mm off the callipers…..hey presto some awesome brakes on std. callipers……….mmmmm std. callipers maybe some new ones needed, what you think Nelly?
