back protectors for the track... ...any recommendations? |
knox ..race type U wont notice youre wearing it after a while. about £100 |
Knox seem to be the top ones, I've just got myself a Alpinestars one for the racing. Tim:ninja: |
any insight on dianese? That's all my local shop has in. |
I heard the ones which use a solid back, or vertebrae type system can actually injure you more than not having one, as when you crash these can move and ride up into your neck, so hard plastic impacts directly into the base of your skull/spinal column. Thus the knox ones are the preferred choice now. |
I have the Dianese 'waistcoat' style. I wanted it snug so deliberately bought a small one. When you pull your one-piece up over it, it does have a tendancy to ride up your back, but soon pulls back down. Apart from that I hardly notice it (altho having said that, I could have a swarm of hornets in my undies and that wouldn't sway my attention when an apex is approaching damn fast with an armco behind it). |
I've got both a Dainese and a Knox. The Dainese is hard plastic backed, comfortable and I know does a decent job as it's been tested more than once by me. However, I bought the Knox on impulse one day when I was buying my MJK No Limits leathers. The soft structure seems to be better and the fit and comfort are better for me. This applies to the armour in leathers as well where current thinking tends to suggest that soft armour is better than hard as it disperse the impact. It's also a lot more comfortable to wear. I feel more secure in it as well. There are lots of manufacturers and styles/shapes, but similar rule to helmets, buy one that fits. I'm sure Dainese will be absolutely fine, but personally I prefer the Knox. WeeJohnyB |
Theres a guy on ebay, selling em,for abart 30 squid, same as Dainese , but without the branding,me and a few mates have em,they're sound,go on clothing & scroll through,"alanavr "i think is his handle or summert like that anyrd,it's him who does them Marlboro Ducati leathers,u'll see im ! :burn: |
Spidi do a very nice one....its called airback and features bags of air.....very very comfy :D |
Had a knox back protector on when an old lady pulled out on me, Me and the bike went over the car at about 40mph , and i landed on my back ,It certianly saved me, wouldnt ride my bike without one |
From discussion I had with MJK at Ally Pally, it might be a bit like helmets. The best one is the one that fits you properly. Get out there and try several different makes. See what feel right. That's the advice I had. :) |
havent got round to gettin one yet but was strongly advised to go for the knox one |
Don't know how tall you are but I'm 6'5 and couldn't get a Knox to fit me very well (I think they used WeeJohnyB as a model :sing: ). I use one of the Dainese vertabrae type. Very comfortable in wearing but I've not had to put it to the test big time (couple of lowsides and that's it). |
I have the Dainese vertabrae type and it looks like it would be up to the job. I dont want to test it though. Its pretty comfy but secure feeling. Alpinestars make a good looking one too |
Out to get new protector soon and I read the "ride" mag comments:-get one that does not go as far up as your neck and not covering your coccyx recommended choice was Davies Odell Forcefield - but personally I'll probably go for a knox. |
Knox currently has knox assist accident cover (albeit with limitations): knox assist Could be tempting |
I've "road tested" my Dainese flexible back protector and it seemed to work fine, it took an impact which saw the back of my Arai nearly ground through the outer shell !!. Maybe I actually hit with my head first ??, could explain a lot :P |
